I've just ordered a copy of "The ByerleyTurk" by Jeremy James. It's the true story of one of the three foundations stallions of the English Thoroughbred breed of horse. The other two were the Darnley Arabian and the Godolphin Arabian, I think.

Anyway, this got me reminiscing about books I read as a child (lots of horsey books, mainly).I can remember reading a novel about the Godolphin Arabian but I can't remember the name of the book or the author. I can remember that the horse has a wheatsheaf mark on him and he has a wee, short name. I'd love to read it again so I'm relying on you folk out there to know the name of the book and to let me know.

Over to you and thanks in anticipation.

Are you thinking of the Black Stallion series of books by Walter Farley? Or "King Of The Wind: The Story of the Godolphin Arabian" by Marguerite Henry?

I HATE it when I can't remember a book's title! :-)

Wow, this is brilliant. That's the book! Dan's ordered it from Amazon today - can't wait to reread it.

Recounting this "quest" to a colleague today got us reminiscing about books we'd enjoyed as children. Like me, she was a "Famous Five" fan (there were two camps - "Famous Five" or "Secret Seven" - you could read both but you'd always have a favorite). She also liked "Chalet School" - I liked "Mallory Towers".

I also recall with pleasure "Eagle of he Ninth" and "Warrior Scarlet" by Rosemary Sutcliffe. I might try our local librarry for them.

Then there were the "Flicka" novels, "Black Stallion" books, the Pullein-Thomson sisters. Oh, how I wish I had kept them all...

I remember reading a book about a horse called 'Copper' or 'Copperhead' when I was a girl; I seem to remember that being something to do with early lineage of the English Thoroughbred. I know I loved it at the time. Can't remember the name of the lady author ... must ask my sister, she's the horsey one in our family! I also loved The Black Stallion et al. And do you remember the Silver Brumby series?!

Hi, Alison.

Don't recall the one you mean. I did read the "Silver Brumby" novels - and "Black Beauty", which still makes me cry. What do horse mad kids read now? My "King of the Wind" came today and I read it this evening. Inside the cover was a list of other Marguerite Henry novels - "Misty of Chincoteague", "Justin Morgan had a Horse" and others I didn't read as a child. A trip to the library is definitely on the cards!
