Monday 21st October

Awake and up at 4.30am. So windy. Still, was able to crack on with the cattle movements and other paperwork for the Festival clear down.

Dottie did NOT like Storm Ashley. When I took their chicken up last night (they’d been put in their room early because we were going out to dinner) at bedtime, I couldn’t see her. She was tucked right at the back of the box with a blanket in, wild eyed. I tried to get her out but she spat at me but I persevered because I couldn’t believe it was the wind making her like that. But she came out and darted into the cat carry box. She didn’t come out this morning, finally appeared at lunchtime once the wind had dropped, went outside for 15 minutes, came in and has slept all afternoon except for a brief waking to eat some chicken, the back in the land of Nod. Poor baby.

Cooper, whose first birthday it is today, was absolutely fine. He was back in the bird seed. Odd cat.

Arranged to pick up four, maybe six bales of hay on Thursday with Mike, using his Landy. With only the two ponies, I reckon that will see us through the winter pretty much. And I’ve sorted out a Harbro run for enough feed to do me until March, in the week after our holiday. Battening down the hatches.

Finished all my Festival stuff apart for the meeting on Wednesday.

Started a tea loaf for a meeting on Thursday and started a Classis Christmas cake (Delia).

Tuesday 22nd October

Lovely autumn day; still a bit breezy though. Dottie is a wee bit lame – she has an abrasion on her upper leg. I’ve put Savlon on it, so hopefully it will heal OK.

I baked for the first time in ages. Two loaves – one tea and one Date & Walnut Malt for Thursday and a Christmas cake. Except Dan wants to the cakeon holiday next week. So I’ll bake another but maybe not this week. Started Christmas pudding but have no mixed peel, so delayed until tomorrow.

Like an eejit, I put the cake in the oven at 6.55pm; it takes four hours. Late bedtime. Not good.

Wednesday 23rd October

High cloud and much cooler than yesterday’s sunshine. I moved the sheep into the two Far paddocks and gave the ponies access to the two Near paddocks.

This is Dottie's box bed on the dining room table. He has personalised it by ripping bits off the sides. Almost as weird as Cooper

Thursday 24th October

Today was all about getting ready for our first event at the Hub – Lesley Riddoch on rebuilding local democracy in Scotland. It all went well, apart from me getting a parking ticket. Oops.

Steamed one of the Christmas puddings; the steamer isn’t big enough for two big ones and I don’t have enough individual pudding basins anymore.

Friday 25th October

Holiday preparations in full swing! Still no sign of our car back – nine weeks, now. Parts seem to be walking from Germany.

Steamed the second Christmas pudding.

Saturday 26th October

Bloody ponies had pinged the gate between Near and Far Top. Sheep met me in the Triangle when I went to bring the ponies in. Roped now, so it won’t happen again.

Gorgeous morning; either rain or a heavy dew overnight but the sun is out now (11.30am). Looks like a good forecast for the week.

Almost ready to go so going to post this, then that’s me until 10th November. Happy days!
