I'm only 26 miles from Melton Mowbray and the cheapest feed I have managed to locate is Argo feeds in Sheffield.  I purchase by the tonne in 25kg sacks, I do negotiate but can't get close to £6 for 25kg (£240 / tonne)! I'm paying around £318 / tonne.

I have previously contacted BOCM Paul but wasn't quoted that rate!!

So, if anyone can put me onto a cheaper supplier I would certainly appreciate it!

The sow and weaner nuts I feed comes from BOCM - last tonne was £327.50 delivered and bagged in 20kg sacks.

When I contacted BOCM direct their prices were much higher than buying through a local merchant (madness). I order through my local stockist and BOCM deliver direct to me. I found my local stockist via BOCM's website.

I buy my food from BOCM Paul by the ton, price = £6 25kg

I've just called my nearest BOCM / Farmgate supplier, and the best price they offer even when I told them what I'm currently paying is £415 / tonne which (although I know its in 20kg sacks) equates to £10.37 for 25kgs!!!

Jackie 2 ... please can you advise who your agent is??

I regularly phone round all our local suppliers and the best I've had lately is £6.99 per 20kg bag when bought by the ton. I can't store more than a ton at a time so can't say what the price might be for more than a ton.

Maybe we need to start up a TAC Coop so we can order in big quantities and get lower prices across the country.  We too get 20kg bags and they are just under or just over £8 a sack depending on how many you buy at a time - so a tonne isn't that much cheaper and there's more time for the rats to get it.  It just saves on collection costs.

Im sorry jackie but it has to be said, selling rare breed pork at that price in a free market is not on!
For friends and family- sure your "not for profit" sales will not do any harm but to the public!

kja...............we're from same region and can't get anywhere near that price per tonne so I'm sorry......but if it were possible to grow weaners on at that sort of outlay then there wouldn't be so many coming out of pig keeping in such large numbers or so many smallholders nervous about the ever rising costs. On request.....and once only....we reared an extra weaner to sell and had to charge £120 per half......it just wasn't viable otherwise :pig:

i know just where your coming from i can only say whats the going rate around here as is the case for most posters it seems there is a vast difference contry wide with pork prices as well as feed.

i changed suppliers begining of this year my feed is now more expensive but the pigs look better for the change imo i now pay £6.96 20kg which is about £30 more a ton more than my old supplier.

The only way i can see Jackie getting the price she gets is that she's getting it blown in rather than in bags or she's getting just past its use by date stuff.
I find BOCM the most expensive feed round here a 20kg bag at the local ag merchants is £10.99 thats £549.50 per tonne so i think she's either got her wires crossed or doing favours for the BOCM rep! :roflanim:

We've just changed suppliers (still through our local feed place) and have got it  down to £6.70 /20kg bag when buying 1/2 a ton or more on a pallet - I'm much happier!

On the cheap sale - I used to be the same, when we just a had a backyard flock of chickens, I would never take money from friends for the odd half dozen eggs as it was a hobby and to even start thinking about trying to cover costs was too daunting.
Now I have to make a living out of our new place, my attitude is totally different. Everything has to pay its way, out half pigs work out at ~£145 butchered and we still sell them all. When you compare the per kg costs to that of organic rare-breed pork at waitrose (which is the comparison you should be making) then ours still look like a bargain!
