I am 'doing' 4 pigs for friends and family and including sausages I will be charging around £70 for a quarter, never mind a half and won't be making that much either :o
So Jackie 2 that's £150 per pig - how can that not be making you a loss ???

Trouble is that when people have had something cheap they think that that's the going rate and don't want to pay any more next time, even if it's from a different supplier, so flogging stuff too cheap doesn't do anyone any good in the long run.  To be honest if I was offered a half pig for 75 quid I'd be a bit suspicious. I'm not having a go Jackie2 just my opinion.

I live in Lincs where there isnt much spare money so £75 seemed ok to me as I dont want to price myself out of the market

i have to agree with you. there is a lot to consider some areas have lots of people selling some dont, some have higher incomes some dont so we all have to price to suit our areas. as i said before we sell at £90 a side which is more expensive than some equivalent to others. some people have to pay £50 + for weaners arond here £35 - £40 is the norm then on top of that feed prices differ across the country.

we all set our prices to what we can achive or what we are happy with.

we can still learn if we are willing to listen.

Hi Jackie 2.

I don't know what your costs actually are but if you take a conservative view they could look something like this:

Cost per weaner @ 8 weeks £35
Cost of feed £7.95 / 25kg sack
Cost of feed from 8 week to 25 weeks £67
Cost of slaughter and butchery £35
Transportation (purchase and slaughter) £10
Cost of worming £2
Cost of straw £5
Total £154

So, IF you did everything at what I would consider to be rock bottom price then you lost £4 per pig, if your costs were any higher then you can do the sums!

Hi Jackie,

Do you really mean feed at £6 for 25kgs??  If so where are you buying it from?

Slaughter and butchery at £20 is incredibly cheap too!

I'd have to agree Pete....we too are Lincolnshire...not too far away and nowhere can we buy pig food at £6 a sack.....or slaughter for £20 .....let alone the butchery costs..........I for one would be delighted were Jackie to share those little secrets............not that i'm suggesting anything untoward..........just those kind of costings aren't available to us............neither are weaners at £15 :pig:

well we sold ours at £3 per lb and no-one batted an eyelid but even then we didn't make a huge profit. What it did do was let people try our pork and we now have orders for our next kill. But I will admit I did get annoyed when someone else in the area was advertising his pork at half the price, ok maybe he can afford to make a loss on his meat but all it does is push the prices down for everyone else. I'm not playing that particular game, especially with the costs of feeding climbing weekly it seems!
