Chorioptic (heel) mange on lamb - how to treat?
« on: November 02, 2015, 01:57:12 pm »
Anyone had it? Can't find any treatment for it in my sheep vet book.  Am treating my goats with Eprinex (cattle) pour-on for heel mange (it works), but no idea if it would also be applicable to sheep.

Will try and speak to vet this pm, but not sure if I will be able to get an answer before it's dark.

Has your vet confirmed the presence of mange by skin scrapings from several sites?

One of the injectables used for scab ?  Your vet should confirm.

Vet has recommended off-licence use of frontline spray (for dogs), as it is used in horses. Just done it. Will need to check her again in about 10 days time and re-apply.

I know what chorioptic mange looks like, I get it quite regularly in goats, so no need to confirm. Also very distinctly only on her front feet, nothing anywhere on her body, she is not rubbing herself, none of the others have any signs of it....

I was a bit thrown by it, as it isn't mentioned anywhere in the  Agnes Winter/Judith Charnley sheep diseases book, and that has so far been exhaustive for my sheep problems....

my sheep occasionally have itchy heels and/ or front feet. the last time one had really itch legs I found little scabs like you might expect to see in mud fever in horses. The vet didn't know if sheep could get mud fever type lesions from wet grass so prescribed Dectomax for parasites.

Yes it is  a mite, and you can take skin scrapings (run a bit of sticky tape over the scabs//lesions) and it should be visible under the microscope.

However if these lesions are only on the legs and from the feet (heel) upwards (and on the scrotum of the boys possibly too) then it is most likely heel mange. It is very common in goats, but this is the first time I have seen it in a sheep - and these are homebred lambs, no stock has been moved onto the farm for over 12 months.... I have observed from my goats that it is susceptible individuals, even when sharing pens, it is often only one in a group that is affected.... but easily treated.

it dosent look anything like the stuff on the link, the skin is dry and the rough flaky bits are white not pink. The rams dont have it on their scrotum and the sheep that do have it tend to get it around the two back toes ( what would be ergot's in horses, not sure what they are called in sheep)

It seems to come when they are in wet grass and goes as soon as it came. very much like mud fever really.
