Someone more knowledgable than me may know whether this is a good idea but one thought I had was is it worth washing the area in some Hibiscrub first then applying the Manuka Honey ointment?
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.
