in lamb ewe with a swelling face
« on: March 10, 2016, 01:30:26 pm »
A carry on from my prolapsed ewe. I've removed the spoon and left her with the harness but I noticed this morning her nose looking a little swollen. She was attacked 2 years ago by a dog and does have some facial scars which do not affect her apart from a little snuffling.

They are all a little hot being inside and it's fairly mild but now a few hours later under her chin has a swelling too.

Any ideas?

Is she breathing ok?
Swelling suddenly around the face could be an allergic reaction.
Swelling under the jaw can be a sign of low protein, eg. from fluke.
I'd suggest if she's not eating , drinking, breathing and moving around absolutely at 100% to get the vet.

This one's having a tough time. Do you know more or less exactly when she's due to lamb?  I'd certainly err on the side of caution and get the vet to take a look.

They are all warm so breathing slightly heavier than normal despite good air flow. I'll give her some metacam.

Her behaviour is normal,  keen for food etc just a little warm and uncomfortable.

She is having a rubbish time she is due on Tuesday but I don't think she'll wait that long,  her udder is huge!

Check the prolapse harness, lengthen along the back and around the neck , only once had a ewe same swelling because the harness was exerting pressure on the neck ??

I've loosened the neck strap. I'm not happy at all with the harness. You get no instructions with the ruddy thing!

The square you put the tail in is rubbing her vulva and it's all puffing up.

I'm not a happy bunny,  nor is she and I'm feeling very down and negative :(

I think each of us has to find the prolapse device that works for us and our sheep.  If you found the spoon-plus-harness, with the harness looser and not rubbing, was working, it might be better to go back to that.  Just make sure the spoon is clean.  You'll already have given a/bs, when the spoon was first fitted, no doubt - but if it's more than the long-acting one lasts, maybe give her another shot if you fit the spoon again.
