Fly strike prevention
« on: May 06, 2021, 02:42:16 pm »
I'm helping a friend with his sheep. One ewe has only just lambed and had a very difficult birth. She's had a course of antibiotics and Metacam. In herself she is fine but is still having quite a bit of bloody discharge. I help wash her and keep her clean but noticed today some green bottles about. If her tail is washed daily there is no point using Clik or Crovect yet. So I just wondered if anyone had any advice please to help prevent fly strike.

You could crutch her back end out, that would probably also mean you don’t need to wash her every day. Wait till she is dry and then see if someone you know can clip her bum out.

Thanks for that Twizzel. I'll see if I can find someone to do that. I think that's an excellent idea!

If you have her in anyway every day you can spray something like citronella or Nettex fly strike spray over her tail, which will mask any smells that flies are attracted to enough for the time you need it. Once she has dried up she should be fine anyway?

Thanks for the reply Anke. My friend has been and got various sprays and potions today which hopefully will do the job. Thanks
