Weaners - Scotland
« on: February 16, 2018, 04:31:48 pm »
Am considering getting a couple of weaners within the next few weeks, to raise for our own meat.

Had Kune Kunes in the past, but looking for something a little larger this time, although docile/easy handling would be preferred.   Any suggestions on what breed, or is it more a case of 'what's available'?

Based in SW Scotland.

Thanks

Good jump up in size with usually good temperament would probably be the berkshire

A good weaner of any breed will be bigger because Kune's grow more slowly. The traditionals are generally more docile but actually all pigs at that age should be fairly active and generally pigs aren't too difficult to handle if they are actually handled.

I don't know what weight you took your Kune's to. Generally Berkshires and Middles go to slaughter at smaller live weights as after about 65 kilo's they tend to lay down fat. Where as Saddles and Lops could easily be taken to 100kg.  The moderns will get there quicker and may be more pushy than a traditional.

As you already said availability will be a big factor.
