I did most my driveway by putting pea gravel down - waiting for a wet and rainy day - tossed a few bags of cement over it - then used a whacker plate - seems to be ok after 4 years. To be fair a few holes here and there - but just fille the holes with more pea gravel and cement, whacked it with a spade ;)

We've recently put down a track and gateway hardstanding for the horses using type 1 MOT. Doug scraped the mud back to fairly solid and then built it up so there's about 15cm Type 1 deep. We used over 6 tons for about a 15m x 1m track. It hasn't been rolled in, we just filled any holes the horses caused for the first couple of weeks and its worrking nicely 2 months on

Scalpings work fine on this farm - just don't be stingy with the thickness of the layer.  Some of our fields also have two gateways, which immediately halves the amount of traffic.
