The James Hutton Institute is conducting research to find out the contribution and potential contribution of crofts and small farms to food and nutrition security. A lot of information is known about overall agricultural production but much less about the role that crofts and small farms play now and can play in the future. We are looking at two Scottish regions: 1) Lochaber, Skye and Lochalsh, Arran and Cumbrae, Argyll and Bute; and 2) Perth and Kinross, and Stirling. Researchers will be interviewing crofters and small farmers, and others connected with the food system at a regional level (for example food businesses, farmersí organisations and regulators). We need the support of crofters and small farmers and those they work with to raise the profile of this important sector.

This work is part of SALSA, a European project with 17 partners across Europe and Africa. The project will look beyond production capacity and investigate food security in terms of the availability of nutritious and safe food, food access and control (including affordability), food utilisation, and food stability. Project partners will be pioneering a novel integrated multi-method approach in 30 regions in Europe and Africa, using the latest satellite technologies, combined with interview data to tell the story behind the food system. SALSA will examine relevant governance systems related to the organisation of small farmers and food chains, and provide tools to guide decision-makers in enhancing the contribution of small farms and food businesses to food and nutrition security.
