So we’ve been on our summer holiday – to Wales. As one might expect, the weather was a bit variable but it was good to learn that Welsh midges are less ferocious than Scottish ones.

We spent three nights at Dot and Tim Tyne’s smallholding, glamping in their bell tent.

If you like camping without the hassle of putting up a tent and sleeping in a bag, then this is for you. The views are beautiful and it’s so peaceful. Loads of lovely beaches too.

We combined this with a visit to Bryn’s Welsh family.

His mum looked a bit more rounded than she did this time last year, when she’d suckled six puppies.

We rounded off the holiday with a couple of nights with a friend who lives near Machynlleth. Their old Welsh farmhouse is just one of the loveliest houses I’ve ever visited – so relaxing.

But we’re home now and busy, busy, busy. After some discussion, we’ve decided that a holiday at this time of year, however welcome, isn’t the best time.

In the week we were away, the vegetable garden has gone wild, we’ve got out of the routine of milking and jobs have piled up. Dan strimmed the two pens that the hens will be moving into on Tuesday while I mowed the front “lawn”. The new John Deere mower’s great – a good buy, I’d say.

Managed to get along to The Food Life event at Easthaven – it had obviously been a huge success because by the time we got there, almost everything was sold out. Great to see small, local producers doing such a great job.

While we were away, Smokey’s allergy took a turn for the worse, so he’s on a bigger dose of Piriton and can’t come inside meantime. This makes reducing his grass intake much more challenging but we managed to get the track up again, so he and Lucy are there full-time, with Bug out at night. The sheep are currently in the middle of the track, but only until Saturday.

Wallace has improved a bit while we’ve been away so, after consultation with the vet, we’re going to continue with the antibiotics for a bit longer.

Full steam ahead with preparations for the Scottish Smallholder Festival now!
