Oxford Sandy and black weaners

Hi all,

After seeing some oxford sandy and black pigs on the internet and rather falling for them i was hoping to get some weaner's to see what they are like to keep. As yet i have been unable to find anyone locally that breeds OSBs (leek, Staffordshire) and cannot collect further than 50km due to regulations, is there anyone out there with weaner's for sale nearby or able to deliver that would be great.

Thanks
Rob & Manda :)

I found mine through the British Pig Association, the OSB section had lists of breeders. You will love them they are really funny and mine are learning NOT to bite my wellies now.

Hi just had a look myself and found Castlecroft Herd at Lower Penn. Breeders are Gary and Pat Christianson tel 01902 766366. That was the only one that I could see for Staffordshire, but they will possibly know of others with stock available.

Thx for that yes I've spoke to Mr Christianson he'd just had a litter but only half survived so had none spare and the next lot are due in Dec, fortunately we've managed to get in touch with a lady in Wales and are happily collecting 4 gilts in August, can't wait.

I thought we were only allowed to collect within a 50km radius but have been told that if its for a hobby there are no distance limits does anyone know if this is correct?  :-\
Thx

If you are running a non commercial (economic) venture then travel rules do not apply. http://www.defra.gov.uk/foodfarm/farmanimal/welfare/transport/documents/transport_pigs.pdf
Hope this helps

Obviously its brilliant that at least some smallholders are exempt from the travel rules but why?  If a pig is being transported surely it has the same needs and rights as one being transported by someone who is commercial.  Not picking just really curious.

With regards to the legislation for transporting animals.....all those who transport any livestock have responsibilities under the Animal Welfare Act and the five freedoms which provides for an animals basic needs eg. freedom from pain / injury etc etc.  But the Welfare of Animals (Transport) (England) Order (the one that means you have to undertake training to transport over 50km) says that where it is in connection with an economic activity e.g you earn money from it (this can include showing) then you need to be trained but if it is not part of a business and you make no money from them (would also mean your not selling meat to friends / neighbours etc) then you dont require training.  To note, there is also an exemption from the transport rules if you are one person transporting 1 animal or 2 people in the car transporting 2 animals etc etc but must be over 18 (and obviously not illegal with the number of people in the car!!!!)
