registered soay, castlemilk moorit  and north ronaldsay sheep, pygmy goats, steinbacher geese, muscovy ducks, various hens, lots of visiting mallards, a naughty border collie, a puss and a couple of guinea pigs

Rubbish, you don't need pigs and sheep to be a smallholder, plenty of us don't :P   You are keeping and breeding livestock, what more do you want?  Some don't even have that yet..

And please do post pics, I have Maran envy and want to enjoy the newcomers from a safe distance  :)

Looking slightly more boyish than girlish though the one sitting on the right looks hopeful.   I would never cull any Marans at that age, it is 6 weeks to be sure when the headgear start to develop.  So they are not the most cost effective of breeds but the eggs do make up for it.  And if you keep the boys on to 5 to 6 mths they do make good eating (sorry come from a farming background  ;)  )

no signs of movement any more will give till the morning but not hopeful.


So thats 5 happy chicks from 9 Maran eggs set!!!

Mine was sadly a complete disaster mate. Only got two out and both died about half an hour after coming out  :(
Beginning to think I am not destined to have Marans!!! Paid silly money for two young birds at Carlisle six weeks or so ago and one is a bloody egg eater!!!
