I candled mine David and had 4 clear at day 8 and think 2 of the really dark ones are but its harder to say. I can only hope the other 6 come out!!

The marans are from the same batch as Moregins
I will set the over under for hatching at 4!!!
Guesses in my house.

Bekah's such a wee optimist ;D
I've got eggs under a broody due to hatch tomorrow ( I think); can't remember how many I put under her either. :fc: for some babies for her - or maybe we could stick bloomer's incy babies under her ;D
-
well i can see cracking and movement in 4 so far!!!
not getting a lot done today :excited: :excited: :excited:
-
 , how exciting!!
-
from eggs cracking how long do they normally take to hatch?
-
Our first one started one early morning. Graham had to drag the boys to school as I was glued to the incy. No dinner. Drove like lightening to school at 3. Fish and chips for tea and a very late night. Same scenario the following morning then finally a chick at 11am day 2 :relief: talk about stress!!
Hope yours are quicker than that. :fc:
I'm guessing you have 6 happy chicks :chook: :chook: :chook: :chook: :chook: :chook: by the end of the week
-
I am trying to do my chores but i keep drifting back to the incy...
thankfully TAS can go with me so i can report back live :excited: :excited: :excited:
-

Ages !!!! :innocent: Some of mine pop out in a few hours from pipping and others took over 24 hrs. My hatches often last 3 days. My bet is 5! Good luck, its such a time waster... and so addictive!
-
based on current evidence i am at 6 but things can still happen either way!!!
-
I bet you are pacing up and down like an expectant dad
-
Now bloomer, like boiling a kettle, it takes ages if you watch it.
Sit down
Breathe deeply
Make some biscuits
Eat them
then go and take another peek :excited:
-
did all that am now cleaning out the bottomless pit that is the utility room
think i'm nesting!!!
-
something else Annie wanted me to try.
VORWERK!
The marans are
(a gift to me from Sue (Darkbrowneggs))
The kids are very optimistic!!!
I'll guess at 6 out of 10

Once they are off heat they're coming here and Bloomers Senior and Junior can do parental visits :roflanim:
-
im thinking 6 is looking good but still thinking bekah could pull of a win!!!
-
The white one included? Jane Ann will be pleased if it survives.
-
as yet no signs from the white one >:( >:( >:(

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I have 2 fully out the shells now...
heat lamp on in brooder so they can move across before bed time...
-
:excited: :excited:
-
This is better than lambing live. :D :D :chook: :chook: :excited:
-
When you put the tray back in watch there's no checks at teh far end - I've lost a couple that way - got stuck over the edge.
-
Our last inclubated batch was on the kitchen table - not quite sure how hygenic - but became the centre of our world for a few days. We watch the wet wobblers stumble out of their shells over lunch. A truly wonderful experience for us all, and one that I would repeat annually as our daughters experience it quite differently as they get older.
Nature is a wonderful teacher - albeher (albeit in female form) rather cruel at times.
Keeping our fingers crossed here for you.
-
morning update
5 chicks now ok in brooder
1 more egg looks promising,
Came down at 2 am to check on them and 1 silly chick had wandered off and got stuck away from the lamp so had chilled off quite a bit, back under lamp soon recovered and is fine this morning, glad i got up though!!!
-
Congratulations on your new arrivals
-
Pics, David?
-
will do in a bit
-
I might pop in past in next day or so :innocent:
-
any time annie!!!
-
well done, good news - open the peapod wine and scrub that 'wannabe' off your nametag
-
the wannabee stays till i find space for pigs and sheep!!!
-
Rubbish, you don't need pigs and sheep to be a smallholder, plenty of us don't :P You are keeping and breeding livestock, what more do you want? Some don't even have that yet..
And please do post pics, I have Maran envy and want to enjoy the newcomers from a safe distance :)
-
picture hopefully
-
Awwwwwww bless    so cute, here's hoping a good percentage are girlies :fc:
-
 so cute. Enjoy while you can. Ours are 5 weeks today and I cannot believe how quickly they are growing up.
-
Well done. :excited:
Looking slightly more boyish than girlish though the one sitting on the right looks hopeful. I would never cull any Marans at that age, it is 6 weeks to be sure when the headgear start to develop. So they are not the most cost effective of breeds but the eggs do make up for it. And if you keep the boys on to 5 to 6 mths they do make good eating (sorry come from a farming background ;) )
-
Is sad to report chick number 6 never made it out of its egg successfully >:( >:( >:(
no signs of movement any more will give till the morning but not hopeful.
So thats 5 happy chicks from 9 Maran eggs set!!!
-
Mine was sadly a complete disaster mate. Only got two out and both died about half an hour after coming out :( .
Beginning to think I am not destined to have Marans!!! Paid silly money for two young birds at Carlisle six weeks or so ago and one is a bloody egg eater!!!

Time to put into solitary & get out the mustard methinks - naughty hen!
-
After todays results I think its gas mark 4 for 50 minutes and stick with hybrids!!!

Stu, if ours are females and we get a cockerel too, you'll get more eggs to try in a few months time. Don't give up yet, Sue said they sometimes take longer than normal eggs - what day are yours on?
Same with David - don't throw them out too soon. Leave the incy on.
-
They hatched out last night Anne - don't think there are any more on the way but the incubator is still on. I will crack them tomorrow and check. I have a five week old pair of Welsummers so hopefully they will give me a darkish egg instead of the Marans!!

Any idea why they died?
-
One had its intestines out as it came from the shell and I don't know about the other. It was lying on its side when checked on later after hatching.
-
well my number 6 definitely died in the hatching process, but the 5 look good now they are fully fluffed up!!!
quick question how long do chicks stay under heat roughly?
-
My OH usually keeps hers under heat until they get their "proper" feathers - mind, depending on breed (& Marans are fairly robust) this time of year they'd possibly be ok for the lamp/leccy hen to be off in the day after about 2 weeks.
Best thing to do is watch them - if they're spreading-out to the edges of their brooder - they're too hot / if they huddle - they're too cold.
Another great time-waster ;)
-
I'm sorry you lost all yours, Stu, but probably better than David losing ours - the kids would have been so disappointed and sad. At least we have 5, hopefully some hens, then can maybe breed more?
Does Royal Mail use any equipment fro monitoring parcels? Like X-ray fro instance, and could that have harmed them?
I know you're incubator is new so don't think it could be that.
-
Congratulations on your new arrivals. We have five ducklings in the kitchen. They are two weeks old and growing very well. But very messy and smelly, no matter how many times a day I clean them out, but great to watch.
-
We hatched 4 out of 7 maran eggs. We picked our's up from Newark show (chose each egg ourselves) and from a reputable dealer. Think it is often just how the eggs go!
I'm thinking I've got 2 girls and 2 boys, from looking at the wing feathers at 24 hours (will wait until they are old enough to be sure)
-
Update
The 5 chicks are growing strong, never realised how noisy chicks could be, may have to rethink where they live soon (currently still in the living room)
The chicks did their first educational visit tonight popping into my sons Beaver Colony for a show and tell session (obviously with me in tow).
Our best guess is 3 boys and 2 girls from this hatching but looks like we have identified homes for all the boys so that is good news!!!
