Quails stopped laying
« on: July 14, 2012, 08:09:09 pm »
Just as I was getting used to the luxury of quail eggs they have gone on strike. Could it be the weather as someone else has reported their chooks stopped too. Perhaps it's becase my chooks are spending a lot of time sitting on their ark. Poor things might think they are quail hawks. Any ideas?!

I have noticed that my hens aren't laying quite as well but quail are still churning out the eggs.

I did think mine had stopped laying a while ago but then found about 20 eggs hidden in a little box they have to shelter in. Are you sure they haven't changed the spot they lay in?

Are they young birds?

Did worm mine a while ago and they looked healthier afterwards.

They can't get very far in the little ark so I don't think they are laying anywhere else. Wondered if they might be eating them!

They are only young 'uns some still laying brittle eggs.

I no longer keep Quail but when i did i changed them over to marriages Quail micro pellets as suggested by a friend, wow what a difference they improved no end. Considering how much Quail eat its worth it in my opinion, egg quality was better too, not to mention larger eggs.

My hens are off lay at the moment too, but it's down to the moult. Eggs often drop off around moulting time, as they are concentrating their reserves into making new feathers, so you can help them through it with poultry spice and an extra ration of corn. Never kept quails but I'd assume they do a similar thing - could this be the reason?

These are youngsters that have only been laying for about 5 weeks. No sign of moulting, but that had been trying to sit on their eggs, so maybe they have gone on strike because I stole them!.

Mine have gone off the lay but got a broody so that impacts into it. Hoping to move in less than a fortnight so can't really let her sit but never mind.
