Well i've picked my january GOS gilts Clover & Lola and hopefully they'll be superstars.
Heres a list of where we hope/plan to be this summer, we hope to meet and compete with some of you. So come on now is the time to start thinking about it.Showing pigs is a wonderful way to meet  like minded piggy people and promote your herd.

Be sure to get yourself a show isolation facility or you will run into trouble with your standstills

Yes herdsman got an isolation unit had one for years as we do sow B&B and we showed last summer too.
Hopefully in the next issue of North Yorkshire Smallholders newsletter there'll be a piece i wrote about our first show experiences last year. I also did a piece in the GOS club magazine about it too.
If i can get Clover & Lola to stand still for a minute i'll try some photies but they're continually bouncing around or all you can see is their bums in the air as they dig deeper and deeper in the paddock!!

You don't go to the Great Yorkshire?

It's a crying shame that I don't think there are any shows in Scotland that have pigs any more. There always used to be pigs at the Royal Highland- the goats shared the shed with them. Good old days.

Have thought about going to Westmorland myself, but not made it yet, the one year I entered it was called off due to the 2nd FMD incident.

I don't go to the Great Yorkshire for several reasons.
1. It means practically a whole week off work which is not possible as it would mean dropping 4 x 1 weekday shows. I only get so many days hol!
2. I will not do the Yorkshire show until they do something about safety that is getting the pigs from the pens to the rings. There is no help whatsoever form the stewards and you must pass with your pigs controlled only with a board and stick thro crowds of people who are not held back by the aforementioned stewards.
3. Security - last year somebody kindly let 2 boars out during the nite, short of sleeping with your pigs, how safe are they?
Some of the big shows have improved their safety measures over concerns of being sued by Joe Public but a lot haven't even looked at it and until they do you won't find me at those shows. The shows we do as listed above all have their rings enclosed by the pens or adjacent and the public are kept back whilst pigs are moved which makes them ideal for beginners to start showing.

I see- I haven't ever made to the Great Yorkshire yet, but I was hoping to take the goats this year. It is surprising that they haven't made more of an effort. The Royal Highland (its our most local show and the biggest in Scotland) has become very keen on security over the last few years. They had problems like that years ago, and they have made measures to make things a lot better. Including closing every bar on the showground by 8pm to get rid of people drinking, security patrols all night, round the livestock too, they close off routes to the public when animals are going through. Although that doesn't always prevent everything it does help.

I know what you mean about the holidays as well. My work insists I have to take a fortnight together, and as I need a week for the Royal Highland, I always take my 2 weeks then. But if I do the Great Yorks as well, that's 3 weeks out of my entitlement! And I still need other days off for some shows which I have to travel to on a Friday.
