Update on Harry
« on: February 05, 2010, 08:28:28 pm »
Thought I'd start a new thread as I don't like the "Why I've been keeping a low profile" title!!

Just to re-cap Harry's behaviour had been nose diving at school since they introduced the home/school book.  The etachers had been discussing with Harry what they were going to write in it, Hee soon sussed that if he was naughty he would get one-to-one attention whilst they adult decided what to write in the book.  It has now changed so that the home/school book is between the adults and Harry now has a smiley chart.  The chart is broken up into four for each day and he gets a smile = good, straight mouth = OK behaviour and sad mouth = unacceptable behaviour.  The behaviour isn't just being naughty, but ties in with the IEP targets of not interrupting and following instructions when first asked.  His smiley chart is photocopied at the end of school on Fridays so we can see haow he has got on.

WELL AM I PROUD OR WHAT?!!!  This week there were 3 sad faces, one straight and all the rest were smiles - yipeeeee!  I am so so proud of him.  Also the teacher called me in today to tell me that Harry had been standing in the lunch queue today and the boy he has been having problems with started trying to push Harry out of the queue, shouting "get to the back of the queue".  When Harry stood his ground the other lad starting kicking him.  I'm so impressed, Harry didn't retaliate once.  Apparently the other lad got sent home from school later for spitting at the teacher!  I'm so pleased with Harry, but just hope to God he doesn't start copying this other lad any more than he has done already.

bless him, it sounds like a much better plan to give him a more age appropriate chart and keep the rest more between the 'grown ups!'

Did the school give any consequence for the boy bullying Harry?  Cos it sounds like thats what it is!

What happend today at school is an exact repeat of what I saw at the Fottball party that they were both invited to.

I didn't ask whether S got punished - I was just so pleased about how well Harry reacted it never occured to me to ask.  I can't really ask now though can I?  I suppose I could write something in the Home/School book along the lines of "Were there any consequences for S as its important for Harry to see and learn by watchng others."

I'm pleased that they've changed the discussion part and are giving him smilies instead.
As for the lunch queue - well done for Harry  ;D ;D ;D Hopefully the school will realise (if they've not already) that this boy is perhaps causing some of Harry's behaviours and will keep a much closer eye on him - he does sound like a bit of a brat ;)
Here's a wee update on Kaitlin (hope you don't mind me butting in ;))
She's STILL waiting for the appointment with the ADHD lot  >:( but through the people who've been to see her at school there has been a referral sent to a forum (probably has another name, but I'm afraid I don't know it) they will be meeting soon to discuss whether she can be offered a place at one of the 3 ASD centres in the area. If she gets it she'll be in a class of 6, with at least 2 teachers. But get to mainstream at play and lunchtimes and for assemblies etc - I'm hoping she'll get it, but as there are only 18 places for the whole of South Lanarkshire it might not happen  :( I'll find out around Easter - fingers crossed.

No news on Harry's refferal yet.  He saw a Cranial Osteopath last Thursday who said he had alot of tension inside his head and did a bit of work on him.  She has given me Bach Flower Remedy Wild Oats and he's to go back in a months time.

His behaviour is on the slippery slope at school and he has now started nicking things off the teachers desk, just small stuff like blu-tack and paperclips, but understandably they are not very impressed!  He does seem to go in a cycle and we're on the downward spiral at the moment.  At least we know it will pick up again.

Harry had an away match with Rugby today and we shared a car with his friend.  By the time we got to Rugby Harry was high as a kite and stayed pretty high.  Anyway, one of the coaches came storming up to me infront of all the other parents and started saying things like "I can't do it.  I can't carry on coaching Harry.  He is too disruptive.  I can't cope.  I'll have to talk to the other coaches because I can't coach Harry anymore.  I just can't." I was dumbfounded.

Recently, I was told my children couldn't continue with one of their after school activities as other children on the waiting list needed a turn.  It is called Boccia.  Its like French Boule and I wanted Harry to do it to help him learn patience and turn taking.  After a few weeks it dawned on me that that whilst my children had only done it for one term there were other children that had been doing it for over a year and they were still in the club.  So I asked the teacher in charge of the Boccia club why mine weren't in the club.  She said that it was really set up for children who have co-ordination problems as it helps them and that one child in particular, who has Cerebal Palsy, needed her friends around her.  She also said she couldn't have more than 20 children at a time.  So I said "OK at least it wasn't my children's behaviour."  "They were the worst behaved," was her quick reply.  She then went on to explain that she doesn't get paid to do the club and that she can't spend time with disruptive children.  So I guess I now know the real reason for them not being in the club.I should have said that Harry was very good friends with one of the children the group was initially set up for and doesn't he need his friends around him like the Cerebal Palsy girl!  However, I didn't I left with my tail between my legs feeling kicked in the stomach.  And now its happend again at Rugby - I feel like stamping my foot like a petulant child - it all feels so unfair.

Oh, MM, I'm so sorry. It all must be so dispiriting for you. You're doing loads though and some things will help. You don't really need comments like that though.

I just feel I'm bending over backwards, trying my best and people just keep kicking me in the stomach.  Part of the problem is that I'm trying my best, but am not equipped and don't have the knowledge or experience to deal positively with Harry's behaviour.  I'm desperately hoping that the NHS will give me some pointers when his referral finally goes through.

I really feel for you and harry. There are not really words are there, you must be speechless so often. But well done both of you for the steps made. I am still shocked at this other boy, he obviously knows which buttons to press and is determined to press them. What a horrible child and from what I remember from the previous thread a horrible mother too!  You are welcome here anytime (not that you would want too, bloody madhouse!) and my disruptive son and your disruptive son can charge around , build treehouses and generally do all the things 'boys' do together!!!!  ;)

So sorry to hear that things arent going so well... its such a shame that people can't just talk to you before they decide they can't manage Harry.
He's such a lovely, lovely boy.  it makes me cross on your behalf when things like that happen!

Remind me what the NHS referal is for? I'd recommend pushing for an occupational therapy assessment to help give H & you some coping strategies - and it might reveal some of the reasons for his behaviours.

The taking stuff from teacher - does he do it to have something to 'fiddle' with, or to hide it, or for the attention he gets when he's found out?

just remember, it isnt your or anyones fault.  And your boys are both so lovely!   x

Can I echo that for Karen's two little girls - they are lovely and very loving girls. To be greeted at a dog show like a very special aunt they hadn't seen for a while turned a number of heads - and great big smiles.  To have such super cuddles fromchildren I'd never met before was absolutely charming!  Thank you so much for bringing them HH and brightening not just my day but some of my friends too! ;D ;D
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

It was my pleasure Annie  ;D
We actually had a really good day out - Kaitlin was behaving and it makes such a difference !
Miri - hang in there  :-* :-* :-*
Kaitlin does the lifting things off the desk too and despite getting into trouble it has no effect on her - she'll do it again if it's something she wants. We also had the situation where she had started dance classes (she LOVES dancing) but after only 2 weeks the teacher had said she wasn't doing well and it would be better to keep her home :'(
Sorry if this bit sounds negative - but I wouldn't put too much faith in the good ol' NHS. The info they have given me thus far is very basic general parenting stuff - stuff we do already, I really think I could probably tell them stuff they don't know because of the amount of research I've done  ::) Even a diagnosis (when it EVENTUALLY comes) won't make any difference as such to how she is treated or how she behaves. But maybe that's just in my area - hopefully yours will be better.
Keep us up to date with things - it's good about the crainial stuff, hopefully you'll see a difference there, keeping my fingers crossed for you xxx

Thanks everyone.  I spoke to one of the other Rugby coaches who has a child similar to Harry and he was pretty shocked and said he would sort it out.  He said it goes against the ethos of the club and must get sorted out.  I'm hoping that I will get an apology next Sunday.  I'm not going to make an official complaint unless anything like this happens again - I think the coach should be given a second chance.

I got a bit of a lift this morning - Harry has been invited to tea with one of the girls in his class.  He has been madly in love with her since she joined the class in September and is always giving her little gifts, like photos of the animals, which she has in her bedroom.  He doesn't get invited out very often so this is a big occasion.  Oliver is going to invite one of his classmates for tea whilst Harry is away as we have found that twos work better than threes!

Its interesting what you said Ruth, a few people have said to get a referral to an OT, but I think our referral is to a Clinical Paedeatrican.  To be honest it seems so long ago I can't quite remember!
