Yes we would sell some ewes separately.
No they are not registered although they are all from mothers that were and fathers that were if that makes sense.
I have lots of photos but don't know how to make them small enough512KB to post.

If the ram WAS registered, he's still registered. You should have received papers from the previous owner.

I THINK you can retrospectively register females, but I'm not sure. If VSS is on, Dot will know.

It's a shame when animals aren't registered because they are essentially "lost" to the breed.

I'm not into Ryelands, but why are unregistered animals 'lost' to anything? I have both registered and unregistered examples of my breed. In my opinion it is far more important to choose sound animals than based on a piece of paper. If a beed society is worth its salt, it should register good examples of the breed anyway, no?


Otherwise doesnt the genepool just get smaller and smaller?

If they aren't registered, they aren't Ryelands since registration is "proof" of the breed. They are just sheep that look like Ryelands.

There is no inspection of Ryelands pre registration - maybe there should be, but the Society relies on breeders to exercise discretion and apply the breed standard. I suppose if you have a very small breed, numerically, you need to keep everything until you can afford to be selective (I don't mean keeping unviable stock, of course)

My sheep are Rylands. Just because they are not part of the society anymore does not mean anything. The proof does not have to come from being registered
We started with registered stock and have always used registered Rams.
The Flock Book Soc were always involved in in fighting which we refused to be a part of. It would seem that just because we didnt swell the coffers of the Soc with our money, our sheep become outcasts. I dont think so!
The nastiness obviously still goes on then. Glad not to be a part of it.
