Show Day

Sunday 19 September, 2004

by Rosemary at 1:58pm in Anything goes 1 comment Comments closed

Well, those of you who keep up with our frighteningly active social diary will know that yesterday was the day of the Clackmannanshire Horticultural Society Annual Exhibition and Show. It was held in the Cochrane Hall in Alva which is a very attractive old hall, if somewhat off the beaten track.

This is the first time we've ben involved. Dan's been helping the Committee buy some IT equipment and set up some software to manage the show entries. Since entries are taken on the Friday before the show, from 7pm to 10pm and from 7am on the Saturday morning, it's been a long weekend for him. (He also ran the City of Stirling 10k road race this morning and has now gone to Tesco. What a guy!)

Bye, Kenny

Well, Kenny the Landrover has gone. We haven't bought anything else yet so we're managing with one car. We can manage just now but it gets harder as the nights get longer because one of us ends up doing all our chores in the dark.

Our car will also get ruined - we're not the most careful owners anyway, onsofar as the Sunday wash is a pipiedream - but muddy boots, horse rugs etc are the way to ruin. So something will have to be purchased pretty soon.

I'd loke a Fiesta van but they're like hen's teeth. Or a pick up - but I always get the impression that they have very hard lives.

Land Rover for sale

No, we're not dead, just busy! We've also decided to take something of a sabattical from the smallholding next year, to allow us to concentrate on other things - Rosemary endurance hosre-riding, me the Lisbon Marathon in April.

So, we're looking to sell our beloved Land Rover so we can buy something more practical for longer distances. (Not that it doesn't do long distances, just that it doesn't do them particularly quickly or cheaply!)

I've knocked up a page with details of the Landy together with a few photos - the rain was lashing down when I took them so they're not the best. If anyone is interested in what we think is a bargain (but then we would say that!) please contact us.

It's been a while...

Boy we've been slack around here! Over two weeks since our last post just isn't good enough - must try harder.

We've been busy though. Lifting and drying hundreds of onions (all that's needed now is the will to plait them), picking and shelling endless pea pods, dealing with what could only be described as a jungle of docks, lifting and drying mounds of spuds and preparing the garden for the local garden competition (we're in the 'biodiversity', or 'scruffy howff' category) in the little spare time we have had.

Taking a breather

We had a 'To Do' weekend this weekend, something I missed off of the long list of things needing done was work on this site - I've got a load of gallery images and recipes to add and there's been plenty happening which should have been logged here (if only for our own reference). It just seems to be a time of year when there's so much to do outside.

Anyway, I'm taking the time now over lunch for a quick update.

First up the belly pork which has been in brine for the past 72 hours was rinsed this morning and left in fresh, clean cold water where it will stay for 24 hours. Then it'll be hung to dry for 24 hours, then hopefully smoked for the same period. Then it'll hopefully be bacon :O)

Victorian Fair

Saturday 8 May, 2004

There is going to be a Victorian Fair in Alloa on 22nd and 23rd May to make the 150th anniversary of the new burgh of Alloa. The event will be based around the historic Alloa Tower.

Dan will be on the Clackmannanshire Horticultural Society stand on the 23rd, dressed as a Victorian gardener. Or at least how we think a Victorian gardener should look.

I am honoured to have been invited to be one of the judges of the best stall and best child's costume. Those that know about these things say it's a poisoned chalice, but I'm looking forward to it. I shall have to get a suitable costume...

The flower garden

Saturday 8 May, 2004

We do have a small flower garden. It's my responsibility so tends to get attention in fits and starts.

The weather has been somewhat changeable today, with sun interspersed with quite heavy showers. We're on holiday in a week, so I'm making gardening plans. I'm good at the planning.

Basically, there are two beds and a lawn and a pond. I use the term lawn loosely. It's the grass inside the fence as opposed to the grass outside the fence. We did have a wildflower meadow, but it was too scruffy even for me, so it's sort of gone.

It's been a busy few days, and an update here is overdue. A quick summary of activity:

Sown in the greenhouse: Catnep, sweetcorn, tarragon, more hungarian hot wax & sweet nardello (a bit late but we'll see how they do), sprouting brocolli (red spear & Spike), cabbages (vertus, savoy best of all & Holsteiner Platter), Courgette Defender.

Sown outside: Parnsip Tender & True, Carrots Parabel & Cubic, Peas (Greenshaft & Sugar Snap Norli), spuds Desiree. The early spuds are starting to show now.

Caurnie Soaperie

One thing we did buy at the Country Living Fair was soap from the Caurnie Soaperie from Kirkintilloch (warning - most bizarrely worded website ahoy!).

Rosemary chose a rose scented soap, while I went for the more manly (or so I kid myself) peppermint and something else, I forget what exactly. It's fab stuff, produces a great lather and the peppermint really gives your bits a zing in the morning, reminds me of when I was a bit slapdash with the ralgex in my football-playing days.

Country Living Spring Fair

Friday 23 April, 2004

We took the day off work to go to the Country Living Spring Fair Scotland at the SECC. It wasn't bad, basically of a subset of the craft, food and clothing areas at the Royal Highland Show. We agreed that at half price (7 quid for the 2 of us) it was just about worth the entry fee, and since we stocked up on sauces from the Curry Sauce Co. at a special price we shouldn't grumble. The Red Thai is my favourite, and thankfully they will be at the RHS again this year so we can get further supplies in June!
