How much for van/4x4 insurance
« on: January 11, 2010, 10:05:28 pm »
Hi all

I'm trying to decide what vehicle to buy and insurance, and for that matter TAX v. CO2 emissions, are coming into the equation.

I've had a play about on the van insurance price comparison websites and am quite shocked at how much they want.  I haven't paid more than about 150quid for vehicle insurance in the last ten years so quotes c£360 are quite horrifying.

That leads to a few questions.

1. Are there "specialist" insurers that understand the market and are cheaper?

2. Are there some 4x4's that are cheaper to insurer than others?  - For now I've looked at a 2000 Defender 110 and a Ford Ranger Thunder.  I like the Ford but its much more expensive to insure that the LandRover.

3. Does my "job" description have any effect?  Its difficult to define what I "do" as in reality, I'm just doing a bit of this, that and the other to make ends meet but the websites don't have such a category ;D ;D

I'm must confess that I'm a bit frustrated so any help from you folks would be much appreciated.

Regards

Your job description does make a difference - pick the closest from the list they give you.  Last time I had a 4 x 4 was my S. forester and that was £270 about 4 years ago

We have a Ford Transit, 55 plate, and I think the insurance is about £340. Not much better I'm afraid.

ive had a van off and on for about 15yrs ,the insurance is always a bit steep, specially when you say personal use,its because there a commercial type vehicle and they cant understand why you would want one for personal private use.. i just think there really handy. motorbikes  furniture hordes of dogs .jet wash insides of mud  ect.my 4x4 is cheaper i used swinton for years. direct line was the cheapest by far this year and last.and it covers you  both commercial and personal if you tell them your using it for work...if you are using it for work but dont tell them and something happens they wont pay up. ive got a peagout partner this time  b4 had transits.brilliant ..but they rot.had a little honda activan brilliant. dead cheap tax too  550cc.
perhaps look at little people carrier type van things. had a nissan vannette as well.just take seats out.cheaper insurance cos its a car.hmm

Thanks for the Direct Line tip.  They are much cheaper, only £177 for the Land Rover.  I guess the pickup is dearer as its considered a toy :o :o

I use the NFU.  When I first started using them I looked up my local branch and went in to have a chat.  I still check around when the insurances are due, but they have been cheapest for 8 years now.

Hello,

Have you considered a Freelander Commercial? Post 2000 diesels are brill - 2.0TD BMW engine.

I have a 2001. It can get just as much in as a Land Rover, the roof comes off for really big things, its got a cage behind the seats, you can pretty much jetwash the insides and the rear door window is electric, so you can have the door shut and window open - great for long things.

They go for pretty cheap money as well - £1500 for  2000 in good nick, £6k would get you a mint 2006 with towbar. I have happily towed a big old trailer and many cars out of ditches the last few weeks!

Oh, did I add its really cheap to insure as well.

;)most of the 4 x 4 pick ups are inssured as commercial i insure our Isuzu with ariva direct commercial the cost is high as the truck is new but i did knock the price down by asking if it was their best price they knocked just over a hundred pounds off. the dodge is insured with mce and is very good they insure all obscure modes of transport and professions.

Thanks for the replies.

I did consider a Freelander, also looked at the x-trail which is a cracking vehicle BUT, it comes down to the road tax situation with CO2 emissions pushing the annual costs up.  The x-trail and the Freelander are quite high CO2 so the tax is up certainly to 200, possibly 400 per year which is way more than I'm prepared to give the government.

Erring more and more towards a pre 2001 Landrover as its 115 per year tax and the insurance is the cheapest for any 4wd I've looked at.

This will be my second vehicle just used when the weather and/or road conditions are bad and for moving stuff around/towing the horse box etc.

I'm selling my beloved Mondeo diesel and buying the wife a Nissan Micra diesel (which is 35 pa tax and a group 3 to insure) which will be the family's main transport.

What is interesting (to me anyway) is that job description/postcode don't seem to be having any great effect on the insurance quotes I'm getting and I was always told that these were big factors.

I have just bought a Mazda B2500 pick-up and didn't think about the insurance and road tax before I bought it, just how many less trips to the feed merchant I would have to make. Road tax is double and insurance is £120 more than I was paying for my old Ford maverick, best deal I could find was with Swinton commercial. It also hates to pass a Petrol station. Used to have an old Land rover 90 and it was great just not very comfortable over any distance
