Hi there,

I'm sure I read somewhere that some abattoirs don't do all animals.  Is that correct?  I know this thread is int he pig section but I wondered if anyone had ideas on cost for sheep and cattle too?

Troubled Waters any abattoirs i have contacted only kill one type whether it be
poultry,sheep,cattle or deer thats not saying that some probably do all.

i priced lamb for slaughter £10 a head, pigs £13.50 not sure about cattle probably £20 thats just a shot in the dark tho.

Thats really cheap.  Our commercial abbatoirs only do pigs, the small private one does sheep and lambs and the community one does everything.  but thats here.  And the cheapest is pigs at 27-30 euros per animal.

Hey that's great.  Thanks for the info.  Not knowing anything about reasonable prices but that doesn't seem too bad.  Considering how much you pay at the butcher just for a small cut.  I know you have to add butchery costs on but still.  Plus the mmmmm'ness of meat you know the history of.  When we first tried home reared beef it was like eating a totally different meat!

where are you living Hilarysmum (paying in euro). to butcher lamb £20 pig £30-50 depending on the cuts you want. im living in the North of Ireland and that seems to be the going rate. have a guy who will come out (on site) slaughter and butcher for £20 lamb only. my girlfreinds aul fella was telling me the way they used to kill (going back a few years now) pigs was rope around their snout to hold them down and a sledge hammer. not my cup of tea.

Did you not hear of the commercial pig breeder in Cootehill, Cavan who was paying lads to chase sick pigs around battering them over the head with a sledgehammer, until they were dead  Sick bugger was too cheap to pay for a vet! think he'll be banned from keeping animals for good thank God.

Im in Brittany, France.  Usual cost for a butcher to cut meat anything between 30 and 60- euros. 

Re the sick bloke, if the neighbours/friends/locals all make it very clear what they think of him so that he is ostracised he may find life very difficult and think again. 

How did he have sick pigS in the first place?  One sick pig at any one time is bad luck, pigs plural start to worry about the standard of pig keeping -

Show on tell might have been Gorden Ramsey show or another cel chef at some point show a live pig hung up by rope/chain and then it's neck cut and then left( it shocked however the presentor was too), Very cruel way to go i think but it was the fact that it was on tv which shocked me more.

Pigs in England are on average about £20/head to slaughter at pork weights. Not all abattoirs slaughter pigs and not all abattoirs that do will slaughter on a Private Kill basis which is what you are looking for. As well as the movement licence you will have to complete an FCI form which is straightforward and is one off. The abattoir will provide you with a copy. Make sure your trailer complies with livestock transport rules and has been throughly cleaned and disinfected before the journey as the vets at the abattoir may choose to inspect it.

Forget killing on farm with sledgehammers, shotguns etc. it is barbaric and one mistake and you'll cause your stock untold suffering. Sure they used to do it in the old days but unless you believe in sending your kids down coalmines for 14 hour shifts or applying leeches and bleeding yourself to relieve a headache, then consign the thought to history where it belongs.

It sickens me to my stomach how some people treat their animals, the old ways of killing was barbaric regardless of method.

Did anyone see the Scottish news recently whereby 25 horses were found on a farm in I think it was Aberdeenshire (but don't quote me on that location), and many more dead and rotting corpses,
why are these people seldom prosecuted? why just take their animals, why not jail them too?

We take all our animals to a local family run abattoir who kill all types of animals and even have one day per month where they carry out halal slaughter. On average we are charged around £17.50 for pigs and sheep and about £60 for a steer - and they let us take our own animals to the pens and settle them down - no stress. However, not all abattoirs are equipped to slaughter 'hairy breed' pigs and only kill certain types of animals on specific days; you should check this out when you are researching your local area.

As for 'on farm' slaughter - DON'T GO THERE!

Regarding animal cruelty of any sort - I think that anyone found guilty should be 'BEATEN WITH STICKS, SCALDED WITH HOT OIL, PUBLICLY FLOGGED and/or HUNG, DRAWN AND QUARTERED'...take your pick...nothing worse in my opinion!
