Title: Abattoir Costs
Post by: troyster on November 01, 2007, 03:45:42 pm
I understand that I cannot slaughter my own pigs, unless myself and my immediate family are the only ones who eat it. . . so I was wondering if anyone had experience in dealing with abattoirs and had any idea how much they would charge per pig (I have a grand total of 2 pigs, who would go to slaughter together).

Thanks

Hi, there

We use a local abattoir and paid £23 per pig a couple of weeks ago to kill and deliver to the butcher. We paid £30 per pig to the butcher although half of one pig wasn't butchered but sold whole.

They did some moaning about the hair on Tamworths, though.

We can use the local commercial abattoir, 27.50 euros incl tax, (but loads of negotiating to get the pigs in as they dont like outdoor pigs) or the public abattoir 1 hours drive away for 45 euros, not sure of the exact cost in £s - the rate is 69 pence to a euro at present.

That's excellent news - thanks.  I was expecting a much higher price.

As you've both had pigs slaughtered, could you tell me if it is a complicated process with loads of paperwork and regulations?

thanks again - it's all very exciting.  I've kept chickens and bees for years, but I'd love to rent a field for cattle and pigs (and my chickents & bees), but it needs careful consideration. . .

I came on here to down stress after collecting piggies from abattoir this afternoon.  I always panic in case anything has gone wrong, especially when the freezer is as empty as it is now.

To answer your question it should not be stressful nor full of paperwork.  We are in France I think though the rules are all the same.

We take the two pigs in a metal livestock trailer.  Just before they go we slap them with our holding number.  This worries me far more than it worries them.  This is a dangerous exercise whereupon the rest of the world keeps well away from the pig pen, as I am prone to covering absolutely everything with the tattoo ink.

At the abattoir I unload them into the appropriate pen signified (mostly sign language) by the reception man.  I already have the paperwork prepared, this shows my name, address holding number and slap mark number and the number of pigs I am sending.  Top copy I keep they have the other 4.

Sometimes I have to sign a form, sometimes not.  It depends on how rushed the reception man is.  Pigs go off, quite happily.  (They wont let me go to the door with them), I wait till they tell me they are done (around 2 minutes).

Five days later I take back top copy - pay - it varies but never more than 28 euros per pig.  Sign receipt take receipt to collecton area where a cheerful man always drops them in the boot.  I cover them with ice packs and polythene and deliver to butcher.

Two suggestons from mine and others experience:

DO NOT feed them more than a handful of breakfast on slaughter day.  If possible reduce the previous nights dinner by at least half.

On collection check the slap number of your pig that it is yours.

Dont worry its easy.

I'd second what Hilarysmum says - it's not very different here in the UK.

Before taking the pigs to the abattoir you'll need to complete a movement license, we've got a copy of the form in Word and just run off two copies. One is left at the abattoir, the other sent to your local DEFRA or SEERAD animal welfare office within 3-4 days of movement (can't remember precisely, it's all on the form).

There's a page on TAS about taking them to slaughter (http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/articles/pigs/slaughter/) - and like it says the most stressful part is having your reversing skills appraised by a gaggle of farmer types!

If you can then feed the pigs in the trailer for a couple of days before they are due to go - it makes loading them so much easier.

Hope this helps!

Dan

Just wondering which abbattoir you go to hilarys mum only we go to saint hilaire and I paid 112€ for two pigs to be slaughtered.  I took them and collected them in 4 days.  They are just cut in two nothing else.

If I have them to sell they are vacuum wrapped and cost around 1.68 € per kilo.

It all seems very expensive after reading the posts on here.

I use the huge commercial abattoir in Moreac, (56) Bernard (aka Jean Floch). Yours sounds exorbitant.  Try pming PigsatlesRues - Kate lives in your area she should know of a commercial abattoir near you, or ask for a list from your local Dept. Vetinaire or any large pig farmer.  The price you are quoting 112 euros was what we paid when we first started, a registered French butcher would collect the pigs, take to abattoir collect carcasses and butcher for that price.

to butcher its between 30-60 £ depending on what you want.

We have been quoted £10 per head for transport and £55 per head for slaughter, which I think is way over the top but that is the way it is in North Scotland.

im all for humane killing. starting to think shotgun to the head is the way forward. especially if the meat is for private consumption. my girlfriends aul fella was telling me the way they used to kill pigs. rope around their snout to hold them down and a sledge hammer.

Hi there,

I'm sure I read somewhere that some abattoirs don't do all animals.  Is that correct?  I know this thread is int he pig section but I wondered if anyone had ideas on cost for sheep and cattle too?

Many thanks, helen.

Troubled Waters any abattoirs i have contacted only kill one type whether it be
poultry, sheep, cattle or deer thats not saying that some probably do all.

i priced lamb for slaughter £10 a head, pigs £13.50 not sure about cattle probably £20 thats just a shot in the dark tho.

Thats really cheap.  Our commercial abbatoirs only do pigs, the small private one does sheep and lambs and the community one does everything.  but thats here.  And the cheapest is pigs at 27-30 euros per animal.

Hey that's great.  Thanks for the info.  Not knowing anything about reasonable prices but that doesn't seem too bad.  Considering how much you pay at the butcher just for a small cut.  I know you have to add butchery costs on but still.  Plus the mmmmm'ness of meat you know the history of.  When we first tried home reared beef it was like eating a totally different meat!

where are you living Hilarysmum (paying in euro). to butcher lamb £20 pig £30-50 depending on the cuts you want. im living in the North of Ireland and that seems to be the going rate. have a guy who will come out (on site) slaughter and butcher for £20 lamb only. my girlfreinds aul fella was telling me the way they used to kill (going back a few years now) pigs was rope around their snout to hold them down and a sledge hammer. not my cup of tea.

Did you not hear of the commercial pig breeder in Cootehill, Cavan who was paying lads to chase sick pigs around battering them over the head with a sledgehammer, until they were dead  :'( Sick bugger was too cheap to pay for a vet! think he'll be banned from keeping animals for good thank God.

well i hope he is but these guys always find a way to worm their way back into the keeping of livestock.

Im in Brittany, France.  Usual cost for a butcher to cut meat anything between 30 and 60- euros.

Re the sick bloke, if the neighbours/friends/locals all make it very clear what they think of him so that he is ostracised he may find life very difficult and think again.

How did he have sick pigS in the first place?  One sick pig at any one time is bad luck, pigs plural start to worry about the standard of pig keeping -

Show on tell might have been Gorden Ramsey show or another cel chef at some point show a live pig hung up by rope/chain and then it's neck cut and then left( it shocked however the presentor was too), Very cruel way to go i think but it was the fact that it was on tv which shocked me more.

Pigs in England are on average about £20/head to slaughter at pork weights. Not all abattoirs slaughter pigs and not all abattoirs that do will slaughter on a Private Kill basis which is what you are looking for. As well as the movement licence you will have to complete an FCI form which is straightforward and is one off. The abattoir will provide you with a copy. Make sure your trailer complies with livestock transport rules and has been throughly cleaned and disinfected before the journey as the vets at the abattoir may choose to inspect it.

Forget killing on farm with sledgehammers, shotguns etc. it is barbaric and one mistake and you'll cause your stock untold suffering. Sure they used to do it in the old days but unless you believe in sending your kids down coalmines for 14 hour shifts or applying leeches and bleeding yourself to relieve a headache, then consign the thought to history where it belongs.

It sickens me to my stomach how some people treat their animals, the old ways of killing was barbaric regardless of method.

Did anyone see the Scottish news recently whereby 25 horses were found on a farm in I think it was Aberdeenshire (but don't quote me on that location), and many more dead and rotting corpses,
why are these people seldom prosecuted? why just take their animals, why not jail them too?

We take all our animals to a local family run abattoir who kill all types of animals and even have one day per month where they carry out halal slaughter. On average we are charged around £17.50 for pigs and sheep and about £60 for a steer - and they let us take our own animals to the pens and settle them down - no stress. However, not all abattoirs are equipped to slaughter 'hairy breed' pigs and only kill certain types of animals on specific days; you should check this out when you are researching your local area.

As for 'on farm' slaughter - DON'T GO THERE!

Regarding animal cruelty of any sort - I think that anyone found guilty should be 'BEATEN WITH STICKS, SCALDED WITH HOT OIL, PUBLICLY FLOGGED and/or HUNG, DRAWN AND QUARTERED'...take your pick...nothing worse in my opinion!

Farmer whilst agreeing with you wholeheartedly, perhaps PUBLIC shaming might work.  Oh and tarring and feathering sounds good too.

You are just TOO kind hearted HM...unfortunately the number of re-offenders suggests that public humiliation goes right over their heads...perhaps the answer IS beheading!

Or perhaps, do to them what they did to the animals......

and then behead them!   :)

I sent my four boys for slaughter last week in grantham, the lincolnshire meat company, and it cost £ 80 (£20 per pig) .The vet let me  in to see them go as i wanted to see the whole process myself ,from birth to death.I did cry ,but it was over within 3 seconds and the  vet talked us through it.
Our butcher charges £25 for half a pig and you can have it how you want.

Thats really, really cheap.  Costs us 30 euros for slaughter, another 30 for butchering then I make the bacon.  It must have cost a fair bit for the salt to do a whole pig!

We get them killed in our local factory Ballon meats who charge 13 euro and then our local butcher cures 18 pounds of back rashers 32 pounds of ham and in the last pig we decided to get everything else in sausages. We ended up with 45 pounds of sausages and all this for just 38 euro.
