Hi

We bought one in 2007 from Bags of Freshness - it's still going strong. We use it most weeks as we buy bulk fish/meat depending on offers and split into 2 person portions.

The machine we bought was about £85, but that purchase included a number of rolls of the plastic used to make the vac-packs.

The website is: http://www.bagsoffreshness.co.uk/

Hope this helps

A vac pack machine is on our shopping list also. Had a look at the bagsoffreshness website & their machine does look the bis
Factotum, I'm guessing you can just chop off a really long bag & squeeze in large joint etc?
Anyone else have any recommendations?
mwncigirl, hope you don't mind me jumping in on your post, have you ordered anything yet?

Yes, we buy rolls of plastic film and cut to length depending on what we're packing. We freeze all sorts from mince to whole legs of lamb and large roasting chickens (9-10lbs).

One thing I have found is not to try to scrimp - the plastic is washable & can go in the dishwasher if necessary. So I usually oversize my packs - that way once I've cut off the top of a pack, it can be washed & then re-used - though of course it is a little bit smaller.

Vac-packing reduces freezer burn and we find that meat & fish keeps well for many months. The plastic is microwave safe too, so the frozen food can go straight from freezer to microwave and gets defrosted in the plastic.

If you have a Lidl store near you they have a vac-packing machine offer. If not, you could probably get in touch with them and have one delivered.

Hi
We recently purchased the JML machine from ebay for £45 for packaging homemade sausages, it came with two free rolls and is great for this use.

I have been looking for a good Vacuum packer for a ages now. we have a Freshield and it is the most temperamental thing you have ever used  >:( . It did work well for the first 6 months, but now it's not so good (under statement).
Factotum I've had a look at the bagsoffreshness web site that looks very good. Can I ask how you get on with the moister setting?

Our machine is an older model - so doesn't have the dry/moist selection.

Our current machine is very robust - we had another that we bought from Costco many years ago and that was quite flimsy and one of the plastic clips to hold the lid down during vacing broke. That made the machine much more difficult to use and eventually I gave up on it & we bought another from BoF.

Sorry I can't be more help.

One more question....veg such as carrots/beans etc. When vac packed & frozen do you still need to blanch. We have been told no ?
Thanks for all the advice so far

Took the plunge & bought the Bags of Freshness machine....
Just the business, very pleased. Although a domestic machine coped with packaging up 4*lambs with a tea break in the middle.
Next question though, has / does anyone vac packed with rosemary in with the lamb etc???
