We are thinking about keeping a few goats ideally for milk,can any one give me a rough idea of prices as looking through our local paper they seem to vary so much,will give you some examples

5 month old billy pygmy £200

Female toggenbury x 10 months £150

Female toggenbury 2 years £120

Male toggenbury 4 months £50

Nanny toggenbury x £150
What breed is best for milk?

Hi, you won't get any milk off a Pygmy I'm afraid.

Now a days no it's not, I have paid £250 for good pedigree Pygmy's in the past. I have also paid £50 for some that are equally as fantastic.

You will get a good amount of milk from a Toggenburg or a British Toggenburg, if you look at them ask the breeder/seller if they are registered, that way you can check their pedigree and have an idea if they were bred for milk yield.

But it depends how much milk you need, I get a total of between 4.5 and 5 ltrs a day in total from a BT type goat and a Golden Guernsey. And it is quite a lot to use up... especially as everything else is still very busy on the holding, the freezer is being cleared in preparation for the pigs in Sept, and there is only so much soft cheese we can eat... but great fun and I love my goats!

And certainly no milk from a pygmy billy

A good few years ago, we had a toggenburg nanny. Had twin billies every year, and one set of triplet billies. She was not a registered goat, or at least we don't think so, but she was our best milker ever - eleven and three quarter pints was her best. I had a nice Britisih Alpine, and she was a good milker too.

Nanny goats are in short supply up here, and although no one round me keeps goats, any for sale do sell quick.

I sold my registered English nanny with female kid for £150 earlier this year. I had lots of interrest so maybe she was under priced, but at the time I saw a number of goats advertised "free to good home", so I was cautious. Pygmies seem to attract extraordinary prices.

I gave £200 each for 2 pygmy wethers- but they are proper ones- not these 3/4 bred goats you see. The same woman was selling a breeding pair for £800!!!!!!
I also gave £30 total for 2 of the nicest AN wethers- real cheeky chaps.
