Yes, cutting down is the right thing to do, Gary, but no one would want or expect you to give up altogether, as its your life, and livelyhood too.  You would be lost without your birds.  Perhaps find someone to help you .....perhaps a teenager who has an interest in poultry, wants to learn, but unable to keep their own?  You must have someone there now, who is feeding and looking to your birds for you, while you are in hospital?

It is a case of compromise - I am sure there is a way round it, to make it easier on yourself but still keep your birds, or maybe a reduced number.  Your main priority is getting well again, and back home.  But even then you will be told to take things steady for a while I am sure.

It's safternoon in Grimsby 1/2 2 near enough.I know and don't want one to find out a very good pal of mine had 10 H.A's and none of them killed him He died  from testicular cancer. Wouldn't go to the Doctor. I thought that the staff at the hospital would have picked it up but it appears not. They do blood test for what you are in for plus any the doctor requests.
I suffer this C.O.P.D.very badly and have to keep plugged into a Oxygen enrichment machine in the house and trail a pipe about to keep me going If I go outside I have a Freedom 400 which is somewhat like an Aqualung on my back I use a cannula up my nose to breathe at six litres a minute. The cylinder contents don't last very long approx 4 hrs then it needs a full cylinder putting on.So to all intents and purposes I don't go far.Its Diagnostic Investigations on Tuesday next week I don't like that visit to DPWH at all.He sticks a needle in my wrist Its like a broken pencil and about as sharp makes my wrist hurt like hell for a day or two.Having told you all that rubbish I will attempt to encourage you.I spent a lot of time at Grimsby College as Teachers Assistant in the SLDD unit.I was not at all well one day and Kath called Doctor Twomey in I just could not struggle up to see him.He did all sorts of tests over the next week or so and He and the hospital suggested if I want to live a lot longer now would be a good time to give up woodwork the dust is not good for your lungs and prescribed me some medicines 4 sorts of inhalers and some steroids and antibiotics I want to see you next Tuesday at the same time in the surgery. He also gave me some Posh water and Vials of Ventolin to take through the nebulizer and its been all down hill since then Its some 11 years ago now.I cannot do any thing much I am so quickly out of breath The sats will be 92 and if I fill a 2 gallon water can I can only carry it 5 - 6 paces and have to stop for a rest. The sats will have dropped to 86 now so I just poodle along as best I can and  that is it. I go over to Brocklesby and see what is going on.The new CR 9090 combine is in the yard but I cannot climb up into it.Carl says I will give you a bunk up with one of the Teleporters then you can have a round or two.I really am looking forward to playing with a 1/4 of a million pounds worth of Farm Machinery. There is no dust problem with it because it has a full air conditioned cab. I have an Racal Airstream helmet but it is no good in the workshop unfortunately. But I can still saw a bit of wood and nail and screw the bits together.Cut the ends out of plastic drums to make plant boxes and the like I just do what I can and then leave what I cannot.Life's kinda tedious now but its far far better than being dead although I keep doing it wrong I get much pleasure out of mu compooter.See I can do cooking still there is little moving about :farmer: :D :farmer:

I am full of admiration for you, George coping with COPD  - the only experience I have of it is my friends old horse suffers badly from it, and has to have a ventolin attached to a very large inhaler twice a day.  Summer months are worst for him, he struggles to breathe poor lad.

Gary, I do sympathise with you being away from your birds and animals.  I was in hospital one night, and I hated it.  Felt so hot, hemmed in, middle of a town .....begged to go home next day and they had to let me.  Then I was not able to do anything much for about 6 weeks, OH took me down to the farm, but I could only watch from the Landy as he fed my animals. That was a bad time, as I worried about them all so much.  But, he cared for them, and they all survived.  I am sure yours will too.  I do understand what you are saying. My animals are my life too, but when you are ill, things are different, and in order to get better you have to rest and recuperate.  Sooner you are better, sooner you can get back to what you love doing :farmer:

I am in no doubt you WILL be able to get back to your animals etc.  In fact, doctors encourage people who have had heart attacks to get back to their normal routine (within reason),  My neighbour had a HA two years ago, very active man, always busy on his smallholding.  Yes, he took it easy for a while, and got help with his fencing, and heavy jobs. But I have seen him up on his outbuilding roof re felting, out in the fields doing all sorts of jobs.  He has changed his diet, etc. but his life goes on as before in respect of his farmiing, and other jobs.

My brother was in hospital a week, including having his stents put in. Been about three months now, and he is back at work.  Just doing full time again now.  Still going to physio, and says he does get out of breathe at times, but all in all, he feels ok most of the time.

So, don't think you will have to live a normal life, Gary.......focus on getting better and back to you outside life which you enjoy.

Have they put a stent in or anything, or given you any more treatment?  I would say once the stent is in, they will let you go home ....so long as you promise to be good and not do too much ;D

At least you have a window to look out of - but is it a nice view?  What about the other patients, surely there is someone you can chat to, to pass the time?  My brother said the worst thing was having to stay in bed all the time.

Never mind, I am sure you will be home soon.......because they will have a waiting list for your bed!!!

What about using the time to read something you never had time to do before, some farming mags, local history, family tree stuff etc. or even write some latters, keep a diary even on scraps of paper.. I know the times I have been in hospital I have been too ill to concentrate on reading so I know thats not for everyone!! I assume you must have internet, what an asset. Try to convince yourself you are on holiday!!! being looked after and fed, when you get home have you people to help you?
