Well - my needles arrived today (love Amazon) and I have half a hat!  Haven't bothered to learn decreasing - just doing an oblong and then gathering it up!  Just using up some wool I had left over after knitting a jumper and always wanted to use the remainder for a hat, and now I have half of one...
