What's in a name?
« on: August 22, 2009, 08:32:21 pm »
Until recently, I used to work for our local education department. Every year, in February, we woudl ge a list of the P1 enrolments for the coming session. Naturally, we woudl have a look at the names - and a good laugh at some of them. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to names and a pet peeve of mine is phonetic spelling of names beacuse folk are too dim or lazy to spell it properly - eg Siobhan spelt Chevonne.

What are some parents thinking of? We (of a certain age) will recall Zowie Bowie, Rolan Bolan etc but we had a Pocahontas (I kid you not); we had a family of (I assume) country and western fans who's children included Jolene, Billy Ray and Bobby Joe (this is Alloa, remember).

In our local rag today, there's a birthday message to a Mum from Kobey and NYMPH. Eh? NYMPH. Poor wee bu**er - is she going to gat a hard time or what?

I don't know if this is true or an urban myth but Edward Lear's daughter was called Chanda

After a lifetime spelling my own name; when my daughter was born I wanted to keep it simple. I named her after my Grandmother, a wonderful woman ! Funny the following year it became one of the UK's most popular names !! Now my daughter asks why I couldn't have named her something more original ! Guess I was never going to get it right !  ::)

I am a teacher and also like laughing at names! You can spot the trends too!!

We have a Chanel - I am desperate to ask if she has 4 older siblings!
Ann Struthers - wonder where she was conceived/born?
Came across a 'Dart' the other day!

When I was little I hated being called just plain old Anne - I didn't even have a second name to fall back on like my sister.  She reverted to Margaret for a couple of years because she took a dislike to Helen.  So anyway, one year I told all my pals that my second name was Jacqueline, and that my Mum had said they had to start calling me Jackie. (my favourite older cousin and heartthrob in my large family at the time was John, AKA Jack, :-[  - he still is - my favourite, that is  ;D) I think it lasted for about a week then one of my teachers realised what was going on "If you want to be called by your second name that's fine, Anne. Now will you stand up and tell everyone what your second name really is please."  I just couldn't admit it was another plain old plain old ( I was born Anne Ross Donald Maclennan - after my Mums Mum and my Dads Dad)  so I became Anne again. ::) ::) Both my husbands called me Annie at home , so Annie I am!

One of my work friends mum had a bit of a mid life crisis when she divorced and she changed her name by deed poll to Mrs Amarmi Versace, my friend refused to put that on her wedding video!!!

I heard that Isla St Clair married Barry White shortly before he died, and was Isla White.

When she married Bryan Ferry she kept Barry's surname as a mark of respect, and is now Isla White Ferry.  :D
