now that my mediocre erection is completed :-( i've decided to get a digger in to "landscape" the garden below my decking

i'ts at a gentle slope just now, but i want it flattened so I can put up nice aligned raised beds - with a nice path in between them.

the whole area will get a weed suppressing membrane down and then i'll get stones/wood chips to go over it - that should keep the weeds/grass down around the raised beds and hopefully leave it looking all nice and tidy.

the area needs to get flattened anyway as i'm planning on putting my polytunnel up at the bottom of it all. So may as well do the lot while i'm at it

Hiya Chris

When you do your raised beds don't use bark chippings, use small sharp stones.

Bark chippings get muddy and weeks will eventially grown in them, plus they do not stop the slugs eating your produce.

We took up all our bark and put down stones, and no more slugs -they hate dragging their bellies across stone as it hurt - so our plants are now hole free

Your home is beautiful! One of our dreams is to self build but I don't think we can aspire to 'self' build to quite the same degree of involvement. Got me all inspired again.

Such a wonderful home for the kids to grow up in.

If anyone is thinking of doing a self build don't hold back, go for it.  I did it a few years ago and would do it again.  Mine was a traditional Timber kit house, nothing as grand as this one, but I employed local tradesmen who I already knew and it went very smoothly.  Only the planning people gave me any hassle.  I'd have stayed in it but my kids wanted me to move nearer so I did.  I made a lot of money on it and was able to afford this place as a result.  It gives you a tremendous sense of achievement.  i was lucky that the plot was at the foot of my garden and I still have another plot up there, but plots can be expensive although prices are lower just now.  The build cost might be lower just now too as tradesmen are looking for work.  So don't hesitate.  Be brave like Julie and Bob
