Lambivac or heptavac P?
« on: June 02, 2013, 09:12:39 am »
Hi all,
Having got over the thrills and spills of our first lambing I'm starting to think about meds our new additions will need. Mums were Heptavaced 6 weeks or so before lambing so they are ok. I imagine that lambivac is a lamb friendly version, but reading prior posts it seems I can also use Heptavac P for the lambs straight off. Just wondering which people use and what the pros/cons are?

I use Heptavac but that's just because that's all I've ever known. Not sure exactly how it works with lambivac but the reason I use Heptavac is because When the lambs booster is due I can tie it in with the ewes pre lambing booster, Means I can buy one bottle of meds and not vacc'ing two different types.

That's my view but I'm sure other people will know more than me :)

My vet recommended Ovivac-P for the lambs whose mothers had had Heptavac-P, then any keeping ewe lambs to get Hep-P when the rest of the flock gets their annual shot.  As I understood him, Ovivac-P is a subset of Heptavac-P and would cover the risk factors for our lambs here - but you should check with your own vet as s/he will know the local conditions and prevalence of diseases.

Ovivac p is available in 100ml bottles , heptavac p in 50 ml bottles .   I f you use ovivac on your lambs then keep some for breeding then they need two doses of heptavac to get them into full cover :raining:
