The picture's a little dark on my laptop, but it looks like echium pininana.  Lots grow in very sheltered gardens down here in west cornwall.

Good call. Thought so yesterday when I wenT searching and today bought some seeds when i visited the lost gardens of heligan. Probably wont like growing in Lincolnshire but I will give it a go.

 Perhaps make a six foot tall wall of bales north east and west ...you might get your sheltered warm spot   and you can always poly sheet it in winter for a sort of greenhouse ..

It's echium pininana as helpfully pointed out above. Already have some seeds growing.

Yup definately Echium. You can grow them in Lincolnshire. My neighbour has grown them in her walled garden (west facing) but some set seed very successfully over the wall in the field our sheep graze.
