Pygmy head collar
« on: February 20, 2013, 08:02:27 am »
Does anyone know where to get a head collat that will fit a pygmt goat?
I am beginning to think I may show Stella at the Highland Show but I have never shown anything before and don't really know what it involves, any advice would be greatly received. I guess there will be guidelines somewhere but don't know where to look.
Many thanks

Showing pygmies is not quite as intensive as milking goats, but the Royal Highland is a 4 day event. As far as I know goats have to be in on Sunday night and go home on Thursday? So you will need to be there every day and feed, water, etc etc. One of the days the actual judging is happeneing, the other days it's just visitors looking at them. You can probably bath them there, but a light material coat would come in useful. A normal collar is enough, I have only ever seen people use a head collar on large males.

You have to bring our own hay and feed, hayrack/feed bowls/water buckets (and holders if you use them), plus grooming equipment/shampoo.

Have you got any registered GG kids/goatlings this summer? There is a good one-day show for young-stock at Belford, just down the road from you. Very low key. No pygmies there though.

I have 3 pygmy goat boys - I haven't been to any shows with them but I just recently found
3 head collars & leads meant for dogs at local Tesco - they were on offer and only cost
£2.50 each. They are really handy and easy to put on - and now I can more easily walk
all three together ... a lot of fun !

The highland show is four days, the goats have to be in by 6 pm on Wednesday and can't leave until we are allowed to on Sunday night ( usually just after 7pm). It is a mad rush for all vehicles to get into the show ground, loaded up and away, so I normally leave it until after the rush and go after 9pm.

Judging for the last couple of years has been on the Saturday. Washing facilities are available if you want to bath them.  A collar and lead is sufficient, straw is provided, and haylage is provided. But it is generally best to take your own hay/ haylage and all the feedstuff you need. Aside frm judging day, it is just the public in on the other days. If you are commuting from home and don't want to come in every day, then I am sure one of us can feed, water and keep an eye on them for you.

Although all the blurb the highland show gives you says that tack pens will be provided- this isn't the case. However you might not have that much stuff, so can probably share a tack pen.

Thank you everyone.
Thanks Anke for telling me about the Belford Show, it looks well worth a visit although this year I will not have any GGs to show. (hope your sheep enjoyed the hay)
The Highland Show sounds very full on so I think it is a non starter for me especially as my cows are due to calf the end of June! (Even with the kind offer of feeding/keeping an eye on them for me)
I will checkout Tescos for the head collars any way, thank you.

There'll be the TAS smallholders show in Lanark in September Susannah, but if you can't wait until then, the Duns Show (Berwickshire show) is great, its 1 day (in August) and there's also the Border Union Show in Kelso which is good too, it's 2 days in July (end of I think).
