Hi I wonder if anyone has any advice as to how to stop my new 8 year old feral cats from pooping inside the shed. I have had them for about 3 months and still have their litter tray in the shed but on investigating an awful smell in the shed found a whole pile of poo and on further investigation some poo on my husbands fishing holdall which was hanging up on a hook!! I've washed everything and put some jeyes fluid down so they probably wont go there again but why are they doing this and how to deter them?

Wash the area with biological clothes washing liquid. This neutralises the smell to deter them going back. Bleaches heighten the smell so cats will return to that spot. Also feed them next to where they have toileted. They don't like to toilet near food sources. Then find a hiding place for the litter tray as far away from the food and bed place as possible. Try using soil in the trays as if they are feral they will not know what litter is for. Finally, when you find a poo put it in the tray so they can smell where it is to tempt them to use the tray.
oh and don't wash out the tray for a week or two, empty it and replace soil, yes, but don't wash away the toilet smell until they have the hang of using the tray. Also make sure there are a couple of trays as some cats won't go where another has been.

As Mammyshaz says ...... try soil.

When we took on our present cat, she had been very much feral in that the people who owned her were never home and she would go off for weeks at a time.

We decided to keep her in for a while to try to establish that this was her home and she should hang around

. She would poo on the floor next to the tray but never in it. I think that she didn't like/understand the litter.
