tough and weatherproof torch recommendations
« on: December 01, 2012, 01:57:44 pm »
What experience of torches/lanterns do people have? Used to have a fabulous Dewalt lantern (came free with another Dewalt tool) but it has very definately died. Would like something rechargable which KEEPS its charge and brightness a good while or something that takes regular batteries. Tried to use a head torch to put chooks to bed last night but so hard to look at both where you're headed and the ground (very lumpy bumpy in our case). Fine for lambing time but not much else. Recommendations please.  ;D

I only use a head torch Im afraid, so that I can have both hands free to lock up, feed and water. I get along fine with it, but the blinking batteries dont last long, even Duracells.

We are currently using a big Clulite rechargeable with two settings which is the lambing torch of choice cos it is damn bright and stays where it's put.  For quick jobs I've got a pocketable but very powerful LED shooting torch which was about £30 from the same people.  But I still like my LED Petzl headtorch which lives in my jacket pocket and is hands-free and bright and easy on batteries.

I use an LED head torch too, I put rechargeable batteries in it.
I can see what I'm doing and where I'm walking with it, whilst having two hands free for buckets and gates.

I have a big Rolson rechargeable which will shine right across two fields, but it's too heavy for anything other than looking for errant sheep/goats/dogs......

We have a clulite, they are big and heavy, but they hold there charge and shine for ages really bright. Not cheap but we'll worth the money, and the company is a small personal one that are really helpful if you phone them and you get good old fashioned service from them.

So many ideas, not enough hours

We generally use headlights in winter too.

I can recommend a rechargeable lantern, but they aren't in stock just now. B&Q do a really good camping lantern, that is fully charged when you get it, so you can just switch it on. Supposedly it lasts for 3 months before t needs recharged, but I'm not sure if that s actually the case. Because we have to stay overnight at shows, we often use lanterns, and B&Q's is the best. Unfortunately, you can't get it just now, because their camping gear isn't in stock! So I'm sorry that its not much use!

the dewalt one is it the lamp or the battery that has died, if its the lamp but your battery is still good you can pick them up without batteries on ebay for next to nowt...

if its a dead battery then get something different...

I did look on ebay and saw they had the bulb as such. Will check that out as fairly sure that may be the problem. Thanks for input so far.

I use an LED head torch as well, which is very bright on its top setting and the batteries last for ages. Mr big problem is that the strap has stretched so much that I've had to tie knots in it to make it fit and I haven't been able to get a replacement.  I don't want to buy a new torch when there's nothing wrong with the one I've got.

Clulite do a rechargable head torch, just seen it on ebay at £24-45. I might get one and give it a try.

I use a Petzl headtorch (which gets through the batteries like nobodies business, even though it's LED) plus a Nightsearcher Trio rechargeable hand lamp (LED). The latter is brilliant (literally), very bright, good distance on the beam, and I probably only have to recharge it once a year (I use it mostly in winter).  I think I paid £33 for it from FaneValley

we got wind-up torches  (and radios for that matter) but both only lasted literally as long as u were winding them, not 20mins like it said on the box.

We have two Makita torches, one is like an examination pit lamp with a hook for hanging it up and the other is like an upright light on a stick, quite expensive but all go on standard makita powertool batteries which are not a prob in our house as OH is a builder and almost all his tools are that brand.

Ive been through a couple of cluelites (they dont take brilliantly to bing dropped!!) and have finally settled on a £7 LED magnetic clip light from local hardware shop- Ive got AA rechargables in it and left it on under the house over the weekend by mistake (major sewage pipe blockage!!) - and it was still shining dimly 48 hours later!!  Rubber outside.  find myself using this one mostley.  NOt as long a directional beam as cluelight though so if you were lamb hunting in the dark, not so good.  This is what it looks like (not suggesting you buy from Amazon - you can get them everywhere.
