I've been asked to pass some of my rhubarb plant on to a colleague - when is the best time to dig it up and transplant it  I've done it once before, but can't remember what time of year; and anyway, the plant suffered somewhat, so I obviously didn't do it the best way!

The depths of winter is best.  Rhubarb likes a bit of frost so dig it up, leave it out for a frosty night, then divide and replant, with loads of manure

I did that and it worked a treat! but is it true that every time you move the plants you have to wait 2 years before you can eat it? I egnore that fact and felt alright

I think the waiting is just to give the plant a chance to recover and build up some size - nothing wrong with eating it if you think it's big enough already.

Make sure that the split crowns are planted the right end up for an upside down crown will die PDQ been there , got the T shirt and no rhubarb that year.
