The police have to deal with all part of society, some of whom are very sick.  My boy was called out to a guy last week who was behaving oddly.  He wouldn't speak and had no ID.  But there were wrappers from 32 Ibuprofen 400mg tablets in his pockets.  So he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital where a bank card was found and gradually his identity established and his wife located.  That situation could have played out a number of different ways, but the reality is the police are an essential part of social services.

i 100% agree that the police are part of the 'social services', the clue is in the term.
mental illness isnt implicated in this case, he was just a gangster probably crackhead. it does that to people...

Most of the people that live in the UK are law abiding and the police are there to see that that remains the case.

There are seriously evil people out there and when one goes on the rampage who gets called out ?

They should arm all the police and bring back the birch and hanging.

There are also bad coppers, just like the one that murdered Tomlinson, but not all coppers are bad and not all citizens are bad.

Most of us live in a cosy little world well away from the gutters of life in the inner cities and I for one wouldn't want a job as a police officer dealing with the scum of our country on a daily basis.

You are always going to get people having a go at the police, but bet your life they are the first to get a call if they get any problems.

Ranting that all coppers are bent and useless will not solve the problems.

My brother was in the army for years, he then went into the police and told us there was more chance of him being killed there than all his time in the army. Now retired but still gets things done to his car and house because he was in the police. justice in this country is a joke and those poor woman shot for what.

These two women were people's daughter, sister,  cousin, aunty. They went out to do a days work and help society keep crime at bay. Somebody called for assistance and they went to help!

Nothing could prepare them for what they were to encounter, no guns or any other weapons. It was a callus, merciless killing by some very disturbed member of the public.

I certainly couldn't do their job and take my hat off to them.

My thoughts go out to those people who are family and friends
