garlic from seed?
« on: September 12, 2012, 03:46:17 pm »
I managed to grow some seed this year  :roflanim: - has anyone tried growing their garlic from it - and when would I do that? Do they need to dry out or go in like walking onions?

Not sure what you would get ducks . To get the same bulb variety you have to plant a clove .
So although the seed will no doubt grow something , it may not be anything like the parent plant .
You may get a bulb that is perfect for what you want , and you could then grow more of that particular bulb by planting the cloves as normal .
If you have the space and the seeds prove viable , it may be worth a go !
I would treat the seed like onion seed . Sow from now through till early spring .

the first year will only give you one clove, but you could then select the biggest and best to grow into the bulb in the second year

We've only planted in the clove form - never seen garlic seeds anywhere - but then we weren't looking either  :innocent:

They are not really seeds they are mini bulbs and called bulbils .

The bulbils can be sown any time now at 3 x the diameter  sieve some sand over them and protect form bird action.   Sow fortnightly till mid March so long as it is unfrozen ground .
They will  make a sort of small bulb next year 2013 , if you leave the thing alone it tends to break out like a shallot  which can then be broken off as  cloves for planting in 2014

Don't let the bulbils dry out too much like I once did and try to sow the dehydrated  husk.. nothng came of them .

Before you sow  , crush a couple between your finger nails to make sure there is still life & liquid in them .

garlic does produce bulbils, but not all the time and not all types, they do also produce seeds, that look very similar to onion or leek seeds.
