Mincer/sausage maker/bacon slicer?
« on: May 02, 2009, 09:23:38 pm »
I am just starting out at keeping pigs and want to make sausages and bacon.  I had hoped to buy attachments for my Kenwood but it has blown up!

Could people please recommend a good and reasonably priced mincer, sausage maker and bacon slicer?  We will be doing 2 pigs and don't know whether hand turned machines will be too slow and laborious.  Any advice would be very welcome, also any advice on websites to look at would be great too.

Hi

Good mincer and vertical sausage stuffer available from  Northern Tools (just Google it).  We bought a small reasonable priced meat slicer and are very dissapointed with it.  Though it's electric it has too little power for raw bacon and overheats.  I suspect that the professional ones are the only answer, or take the rind off and use a sharp carving knife as we do now!

Is that Northern Tools & Accessories in Newcastle upon Tyne or Northern Tools + Equipment in Portsmouth (Northern? you can't really get much further South!)? Or is there another one I missed? :)

Check out Ebay but be careful, some unscrupulous people put knackered kit on it! Pay by paypal and you are covered .
Most bacon sold in shop prepacks is frozen before slicing - thats how the pros do it - dont try it at home - they use industrial grade machines costing thousands. fascinating to watch a whole side be reduced to rashers in no time though!
