If you think you can boat them across, do it! As you say, they're tame enough to get back; they're on your land even if they swim off, and gazillions of sheep graze around large water bodies without being dragged in by Nessie  :innocent:

i found a wee boat on gumtree which is perfect, except its in motherwell, anyone know a courier that would deliver it to peterhead? its 8ft x 4ft. the only quote i could find cost more than the boat, and took ages online to find that.

It would be worth you putting it on the Shipley website.  It was set-up for Ebayers, but they move all manner of stuff around the country.

Isn't there anywhere in Peterhead of Fraserbr. you could ask round? a friend lives up there and has aboat, too big for you to borrow, but seems much more leisure oriented round there now?
How about making a pallet raft and pulling it over (even better for a video  :-J  )

There are plenty of places where goats are used for plant management on islands successfully, the parks authority in milton keynes use them on the big islands in some of their lakes, they do have field shelters though! But also live there all year round! If it was my island I'd be tempted to try it!!!
