Swallows arrived this morning, feel for them as its very wet and cold. A few years ago May and June were terrible. When the baby swallows hatched the parents chucked them out of the nest and all died. At first I thought it was just around my place but it happened all over the village. I can only presume the parent birds did this as they were not enough insects to feed them. What ever the reason it was horrible to see lots of newly hatched dead birds

We got the first pair of swallows returning a couple of days ago - and on the same day, the midges were rife.
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

Don't suppose anyone has the expertise to do an on-line map showing dates of arrival in various parts of the country?

got swallows mate, it is the swifts i am looking for and then the pair of Hobbies we have had for the last 2 years! they are my favorite birds of prey! they nest in a pear tree on my plot! great fun!! the female Goshawk hates them but can't catch them and the nest is placed so she can't get in. very clever!  ;D
