Many years ago before we had a smallholding we once grew tomatoes which were very much taller than yours Phil by the time it came round to planting out time.  So we took them down to our allotment and dug a long trench, filled with lovely manure etc.  We laid the tomatoes down along the trench so just a couple of pairs of true leaves were above ground.  They rapidly grew a huge root system along the whole of the buried stems, and eventually made some very sturdy plants, with a very heavy crop.

Chairmanphil your little tomatoes on the shelf in your last photo are still doing better than my biggest tomato plants  ::) I was very proud of the little chaps till I saw your photos :(.

they are a weird little variety, mureno or something like that. they are a strange shape very pointed at the end. and they have a kinda tiger stripes pattern. nice taste but tough skins and the plants are always a little on the small side but the yield is good and great to cook with. learning loads about tomatoes here!

planted out a load more of them today, used the same technique as before. they are starting to look very good now! while i was working on them i noticed i got my first courgette up too. all coming together now!

keep potting the courgette up as well, to stop it getting leggy m8

will do, the courgettes involve crookneck squash and 3 different pattipans. they grow very well in my soil and i have been very successful with them in the past.

 That's the only way to plant toms FW , all the hairs on the extended stem become feeder roots and for good toms that's what you want .. The more roots initially the stronger the plant will be and then it starts shoving up a teemendous feeder stem for some fantastic toms.

 I've just laid in a beefsteak  tom in the glasshouse ( Tuesday ) , when we came back home today after a three day break it is over 8 inches tall .


 All my indoor germinating toms have now broken through and are about 2.5 inches tall .. There might even be a couple of breakouts in the glasshouse sowings this time tomorrow for the overnight temp has not dropped beliw 48 oF.( I always have have 2x 14 watt bulbs on and a five day candle on at night when we are here )

found a pack of gardeners delight seeds today so planted them out and all originals are in large pots now.

got good fruit trusses on the pomodoro and sun belles. should have flowers in about a week! i have got some photos but can't work photobucket and my OH is out working tonight.

should have my first flower break very soon. we have has some sun over the last couple of days and it has warmed up the greenhouse very nicely!

My tomatoes are rubbish this year. Mistake number one was to germinate them in the polytunnel (we currently have no house) - which was too cold for them so they are still very small.

Mistake number two was to put the seeds in pots of seedling compost and not module trays - so now they have germinated they are still in the relatively low nutrient seedling compost. I need to pot them on into something more appropriate.

They are so behind now...... It's hardly worth carrying on.
