That Time Off Year Again
« on: October 30, 2011, 10:07:15 am »
Last night while watching a bit of TV Jake our Jack Russell started getting upset, shaking like a leaf. Being a bit deaf I thought he must hear someone outside so went to have a look. OH was not home from work otherwise he would have heard what was going on. The B&B down the hill was having a fireworks party and boy did they have plenty of fireworks. Ponies were scared stiff so in the dark I managed to get them all inside. Horses next door were also in a panic but no one home to take them in and as they are Arabs and very flighty I decided not to risk getting hurt. In the end they stayed up at the top of their field next to my building where I left all the outside lights on to see if that would calm them. I also left all the lights on inside as well to try and calm my lot. Even the pigs were scared. All for the time it would have taken to tell us they were having a fireworks party to able us to take animals in. Not good neighbours  in my book.  >:(

No fireworks near to my livestock, too far away from habitation and I am so glad that all my dogs actually seem to enjoy the bangs and flashes to the point of asking to go outside and see them. :) :)

Living next door to the Army Training camp, our ponies don't even lift there heads at mortars, so I'm hopeful that Bonfire Night will pass peacefully. It is a pest though - and it goes on so long.

Our goats are quite taken by fireworks, they stand and watch them going "oooh and ahhhh" but its those ruddy chinese lanterns that get my heart panicking  >:(

I think its only right that neighbours SHOULD warn others if they are planning to let off early (or late) fireworks, you expect it on the 5th so are prepared. Its not fair on livestock/pets and also the elderly and vulnerable can get quite a scare.

I had to go round my paddocks picking up the dead fireworks before letting the ponies out, they all came over our way which to me was terrible. Our ponies are used to low flying jets from the R.A.F. but loud bangs and lots of lighting up of the sky does upset them. The B&B caters for a specialised type of person and they do through quite a lot of parties which do no effect us but this does and a phone call would have been nice.

We're quite lucky and thankfully don't have much bother with fireworks most of our neighbours are too tight to buy them anyway! but they do have big bonfires the smoke of which is acrid, i think they use them to get rid of all their dodgy waste which they would otherwise have to pay for disposal of! My other concern though is the already mentioned chinese lanterns, my stupid SIL brought a big pack to a pizza party we had and when i told her i wasn't happy about her setting them off i got a right mouthful about being a spoilsport and no fun! Saying that she hasn't brought any since!

Somebody in the next hamlet threw a big fireworks bash last saturday and no warning at all, my horse was ok after the first 5 minutes but the dogs and sheep weren't. It would be nice if people could warn others and at least we would have the chance of lessening the panic. I noticed that my neighbour has quite a large pile of rubbish in his top small paddock which is right next to the field the horse is in, as yet they have said nothing about lighting it but I will be upset if he lights it this weekend without warning as he knows the animals are there.

I have got all the calm tablets ready for the dogs (herbal of course) which normally helps at this time of year and cleared a spot under the bed for the old dog where he likes to hide on bonfire night and thunder storms.

The pigs have been brought in for the bad weather so extra straw and they should be fine (I hope)
