Floating beans are bad?

hiya all just a wondering, I after puting beans/seed in to water and they float does that mean they are bad or good.
i have a memory floating around in my brain that floating beans(that beingbean broad ,runner etc) that they are bad and will come to no good.

is this right or is it just one of them weird things that i have in my brain !!!!

put a bean in water over night then put in wet paper towel or napkin in a warm place if seed good will sprout in a few days

I think that was for pumpkin seeds, Linz (I'll check) If they float they've not ripened enough. :&>
