out of date horse wormers
« on: April 12, 2011, 04:32:24 pm »
How long are horse wormers useable after the sell by date?  Going on food labels the sell by dates are quite early related to actual food decay, presumably because the sellers would have to be prepared to guarantee safety and err on the side of caution ::)

But where chemical wormers are concerned, do they lose effectiveness quickly or can they still be used a couple of months later without danger, are they completely useless or what?  Anyone know?

I tend to bulk buy for the numbers I have and inevitably have a few at the tail end that are close to the date or just past it but I don't want to throw out something useful, nor use something dangerous.. ???  I've just been double tapeworming and am needing to reorder now as nearly all gone :o

As long as the seals are not broken it should be safe to use. I've used out of date wormers, and I know lots of others who do. I've not heard of problems.

Don't quote me, but it's possibly like a human using out of date medication?

They don't do any harm but aren't as effective.

OK thanks, just didn't want to poison them while not sorting out the wormies ;)

I'll use up the last then - might be time to try a worm count comparison of two samples.. if I could just get the right two ponies to poo within sight so I can collect the right samples ::)

I've used out of date wormers too. Often the date is for the packaging and not the contents. This also applied to a lot of food items

Don't have stables here, and just half a barn left, the other half lost its roof in December :o so I can use the lower pens for short periods like farrier visits, the castration op etc but it's right beside the stallion so not somewhere I use routinely or leave anything in for long.  Pretty much everything is done in the fields where they are :)  Over winter that meant 12 in one field plus 2 and 2 and one away, but last week it got evened out a bit so now a more manageable 3+7+3+2 (and 2 away being ridden, hopefully to be sold..)

Anyway, the deed is done - gave 6 youngsters in date 1.5-2 syringes each according to size, and 3 older ponies had overdue granules in a wee feed as they probably have greater immunity anyway than the youngstock if the effectiveness is lower..

Still got enough syringes for 3 of the remaining 4 big girls tomorrow, the other will have granules as she's anti syringe anyway ;) and then I just need 3.5 more for the 2 geldings in the end paddock and pay for the 2 who are up Aberfeldy way and I'll be done for a while :o

Meantime I was in a cupboard and discovered my pickling vinegar is sell by of July 09 :o and the onions are already salted and nearly ready to pickle :(  Not sure about 2 years late but surely vinegar can't go off?

I wonder if I am needing to clear cupboards more often, both kitchen ones and garage feedroom ones.. ::)

I've turfed out overdate chocolates for the first time recently, but they were the alcohol ones and I didn't like them anyway ;)  no other kind would have a hope of reaching the date on the box, the day after purchase is more usual limit - if that  :-[

Anyway, the ponies that had the old wormers are still standing and still eating so whether they're dewormed completely, partly or not at all, at least they're not ill :o

I am used to a smiley rolling it's eyes that is : plus ) plus ) and there isn't one on here, assume that's the one you're missing too?  But this board has  :horse: and  :cat: and  :sheep: which are fab so I'm just having to re-express myself in new ways  :apple:
