I have a mesh floor (and no insulation in the roof) but was told to slide in the insulated floor for winter. What you're saying is that they could just have the mesh floor all winter. Even though it's cold?

yes, leave the floor out -- cold doesnt kill, damp does.
There are loads of different view but many go for insulation above so condensation is only on the walls where it drips down and out through the mesh floor.

BTW, keep trying to teach my bees to read but no joy -- treat bee books like gardening books -- good practice and sound advice but nowhere near gospel !

Yep, totally agree with L99

No one way is the right way, everyone does things slightly differently & it can also depend on which part of the country you are in, as the weather conditions, forage etc is as unique as your colonies. 

You learn as you go along.  The books can be a great prompt, but your local Society will be an invaluable support  :bee:
