Tomatoes outside in Scotland
« on: April 07, 2011, 08:45:28 pm »
We didn't manage this last year, but would like to maybe try a plant or 2 this year - any ideas for the ones most likely to survive/produce in a fairly exposed/windy area?

I'd like to know too, although my back garden is South facing and sheltered by 40 foot leylands

My first year here I grew tomatoes outside - probably Gardeners Delight but it's a bit long ago for my poor memory.  They grew beautifully, lovely strong plants, heavy healthy crop, but they never ripened before they were struck down by frosts.  I have never tried again. However, if you could protect them from the wind with a tall frame on three sides, perhaps lined with foil at the back to reflect the sun back onto the plants, you could have a chance.  Another option would be to grow very small cherry types which ripen earlier than full sized fruits

I got a freebie packet of G Delight on a magazine, will give them a go.

Even more of a reason for us to get a polytunnel this year methinks  ;D
