4 years ago we moved to mid Norfolk. Didn't know anyone but found the natives friendly (nice place!).
I had previously worked as a volunteer for a charity near my old home. This took up about 4 hours a month. So I looked around for something similar in my new area.
I have now worked (about 4 - 6 hours per month) for a local Credit Union. It is not a charity but operates on a similar basis with a group of volunteers who are nice helpful people with a lot of experience (mostly retired). They make a pool of potential friends and help bring a bit of sanity and perspective into what could be a narrow isolated sort of existence.
Depending on your commitments, a charity shop, the committee which runs the village hall, helps the elderly or similar would all welcome someone with a little time and a good brain who doesn't mind 'mucking-in' when help is needed.
The trade is that you meet people, make friends, get help yourself.
