How many???
« on: January 12, 2009, 08:10:17 pm »
Now we are on our second batch of pigs and are comfortable with their progress my thoughts are now turning to sheep. I have around 3-4 acres of pasture that has rested well for around two seasons and produces masses of grass, I dont want to spend all summer topping and quite fancy putting some lamb or mutton in the freezer at some stage.

I would be greatful for your opinions on the following.

How many head per acre is about right for keeping the grass under control?
Is much supplementry feeding required?
Most of the land fencing is stockproof but the neighbours property is post and rail, will standard gallaher elecric fencing (or similar) keep shhep in the field they are meant to be in, i know it works for the pigs but they seem much brighter??
I dont want to breed just yet, Id rather bring on lambs until say october, is this about right?

Thank for you help.
Mick
