They went today
« on: December 06, 2010, 09:53:40 pm »
well our pigs went to slaughter today and I am quietly mulling it over  :-\. Still feeling a little sad but enjoyed the experience of pig keeping so much. Have decided to get some Kune Kunes next to keep permenantly rather than send to slaughter. Can't fault the temperament of the large blacks we have just sent off but OMG they were large boys and their time had definately come. Hopefully the meat they produce will come back tasty and reflect the free range life they had  ???

It's weird how they get to the outstaying their welcome bit by the time they get to 6 months  ;)
Your pork will be fabby - I'm slowly munching my way through our last lot - GOS x Large Black - and I have to say it's the best yet ! Lovely and sweet and not as 'porky' as some of my others  :yum:
As for the Kunes - you'll not hear me say a bad word about them  ;D If Tamworths are the racehorses of the pig world, the Kunes are the labradors  ;) They're really charming little pigs, ALWAYS happy to see you (especially for a tummy rub !) very easily trained (lots of owners do agility courses with them to keep them amused) and just great fun to have around. Even my entire boar (who's just a tad bigger than the recommended size  ;) ;D ;D) is the biggest softest lump you'll find. But like all animals, you've got to make sure they know who the boss is - it's easy to let them away with murder when they're cute little weaners, but you don't want a full size one thinking it's still okay to come into the house  ;)
Good luck with them & keep us up to date with their antics  ;D

Eve I probably want to show him the freezer space at least once a day!!!!

Hilary is a GOS x (or more of a cross GOS in this weather) our pet large black is Digby, who really was an accidental pet pig.  (He is tucked up on the sofa, under his duvet, snoring  -   what a life)

HM - does Digby have his own facebook page ? I've seen a black pig called Digby on there (though suspect he might be a rather large micro  ;))

I dont honestly know, he has a lot of fans.  He is a very large black (breed and appearance).  Can I see the Digby site without having to log on to Facebook, I am very technophobic.

Don't let me husband read this - he'll claim your pigs have a better life than he has!  :D

A pig, on a sofa, under a duvet... what a wonderful sight!  :pig:  :pig:

HH thanks could read that must investigate further!!

Eve, I dont let my oH sit on the sofa, he is out cutting the wood to keep Digby warm.  (Anyway there is no room left Digby takes up the whole thing).

Come on folks, it's one thing giving your pig a sofa and duvet, but a laptop and broadband connection is surely going a bit too far isn't it!?!

Do you have any pictures Hillarys mum?
I am sharing our sofa at the mo with a black lab who is also snoring very loudly!
