Chicken Stomach Trouble...
« on: November 01, 2010, 11:09:58 am »
Mornings everyone,

Got my chickens last week, 6 Orpingtons and 6 Brahmas - they have all settled in ok, but one of them has terrible diarrhea - how long should I wait before getting her treated?

Still no eggs yet, but I guess they have to settle in..

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly - they are POL and I only got them a week ago, the farmer said the Brahmas will lay through the winter?

Its dark brown...does the colour indicate anything?

Ok, then I will leave it for a while, everyone has 'stomach trouble' at some point - and it usually sorts itself out.

i would worm and then just watch. is it fresh ground or has there been chucks on it in the last year. traditional breeds take longer to start laying. it could easily be spring before you get any eggs but you will in the end.

None of my poultry will touch red cabbage, even the goat leaves it!
Probably just change of diet along with fresh grass which may have been non existant or limited at their last abode. If they are wormed then just observe and dont worry.

I have lights in my chicken sheds over winter, is on a timer and goes on at 6am until about 8, then again from 4pm until 8pm. They do lay through the winter, but I don't do it to the ones who are in their first winter. Mine are about 18 weeks now and have not started laying, so i don't hold many hopes for them, but the older batch is still laying. although they are now going into their third winter eggs are down a bit.

The chicken has bright green poops now - i think this is bile and she is not eating/drinking? Should I take her to the vet?

All the other hens are fine.

green poo is normal too. if you think it sick take her. but the vet is very limited as to what they can do.
